Brady Corbet is an actor that we should be watching out for this year as his career begins to pick up pace.
He is back on the big screen this year as he takes on the title role in Antonio Campos’s latest project Simon Killer - a project that Campos also penned.
Like most young actors Corbet kicked off his acting career in TV in 2000 with roles in the likes of The King of Queens and Oliver Beene - but it wasn’t long before he made his big screen debut.
His first film role came in 2003 when he played Mason Freeman in the Catherine Hardwicke directed movie Thirteen: a film that also starred Evan Rachel Wood, Nikki Reed and Holly Hunter.
Thirteen was a movie that tackled themes of drug and alcohol abuse as well as self harm and was a movie that caused quite stir when it was released.
Since making his debut Corbet has worked predominately in film as he followed Thirteen up with roles in Thunderbirds, Mysterious Skin as well as the remake of Funny Games.
But he did return to television in 2006 when he took on the role of Derek Huxley, the son of Jack Bauer’s girlfriend, in the fifth series of the popular 24.
More recently he was back in the big screen as he appeared in Melancholia and Martha Marcy May Marlene - two movies that were met well by the critics when it was released.
The latter was directed by Sean Durkin and saw Corbet team up with another rising star in the form of Elizabeth Olsen. John Hawkes, Sarah Paulson and Hugh Dancy were also on the cast list.
The movie was a big hit with the critics and went on to pick up a string of award nominations - the whole cast being recognised when they were nominated for Best Ensemble Cast at the Gotham Awards.
He will lead the cast of Simon Killer this week as he stars alongside Mati Diop, Lila Salet and Michael Abiteboul.
The movie follows
a recent college graduate who goes to Paris after breaking up with his girlfriend of five years.
His life should be open-ended and full of promise, but he can’t shake his feelings of loss. Being a stranger in a strange land only aggravates his situation.
When he falls in love with a young mysterious prostitute, a fateful journey begins. Though we soon learn that Simon is the one with deeper secrets.
Killer Simon is the first movie for director Campos since Afterschool and his he second feature film outing.
While this is the first time that Campos and Corbet have worked together as director and actor but this is their second project together after Campos produced Martha Marcy May Marlene.
Corbet has also completed work on The Sleepwalker, directed by Mona Fastvold, and has been linked to Regular Boy and Paradise Lost.
The Sleepwalker is a project that will show off another side of the actor as he has teamed up with Fastvold to pen the screenplay for the film.
There are a handful of young actors who are making quite a name for themselves and Corbet is one that we should be keeping an eye out for over the next couple of years as he has already shown that he is a versatile actor.
And it seems that Corbet could well be an actor who will make the leap into directing as he has already made his debut with shot Protect You + Me - it seems he has a bright future in front of and behind the camera.
Simon Killer is released 12th April.
