The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense

Oculus is one of the standout horror films of the summer, as Karen Gillan teams up with Brenton Thwaites.

Oculus has already enjoyed success at the U.S. box office, and now UK audiences will be on the edge of their seats.

The horror genre has been a major staple of the big screen over the years, delivering some terrific and iconic films.

We take a look at some of the horror films that have enjoyed huge box office success.

- The Sixth Sense - $672 million

The Sixth Sense hit the big screen back in 1999 and was the film that really helped put director M. Night Shyamalan on the map.

Starring Bruce Willis, The Sixth Sense follows a young boy who can see and communicate with spirits who don't know that they are dead. Dr. Malcolm Crowe is brought on board to try and help Cole.

The Sixth Sense really is a classic ghost story, and remains Shyamalan's best film as a director: sadly, it has gone a little downhill since then.

The movie was a critical and box office smash, as it went to gross over $672 million worldwide: making it the second highest grossing film of the year behind Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

- Jaws - $470 million

There is no greater horror movie that Jaws - it really is as terrifying now as it was back in 1975.

Directed by Steven Spielberg, the movie was an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Peter Benchley, and followed a great white as it terrorises the beach loving folk of Amity.

Jaws was the movie that really kicked off the blockbuster phenomenon - it really was a watershed and important moment for cinema.

The movie was a huge success as it took in excess of $470 million at the global box office: which was the highest grossing movie ever, at the time.

While we have seen a handful of sequels follow, they have never been able to capture the thrill and the fear of the first.

- The Exorcist - $441 million

When you thing about classic horror movies, The Exorcist is one that is right up there.

An adaptation of the book of the same name by William Blatty, the movie was directed by William Friedkin and was released back in 1973.

A mother enlists the help of two priests when her young daughter is possessed by an unknown entity.

Of course, The Exorcist whipped up all sorts of controversy when it was released, but that didn't stop it from being a huge hit.

The movie would not only gross over $441 million, but it went on to be nominated for ten Oscars; including Best Picture. However, it would lose out to The Sting.

The Exorcist remains one of the best and most iconic horror movies of all time.

- What Lies Beneath - $291 million

What Lies Beneath was released back in 2000 and saw Harrison Ford team up with Michelle Pfeiffer to play husband and wife.

The movie saw Robert Zemeckis in the director's chair, while Clark Gregg penned the horror screenplay.

The movie follows Michelle Pfeiffer, who believes her house is haunted... she slowly starts to lose her grip on reality.

The movie may not have split the critics, but it still performed well at the box office in the summer of 2000. It went on to gross $291 million.

- The Ring - $249 million

Ringu is one of the most iconic Japanese horror films of all time, and was given a U.S. remake in 2002 by director Gore Verbinski.

The Ring saw Verbinski team up with Oscar nominated actress Naomi Watts and Brian Cox.

The movie follows young journalist must investigate a mysterious videotape, which seems to cause the death of anyone in a week of viewing it.

The Ring was met well by the critics and went on to be one of the best horror movies to hit the big screen that year.

As well as winning over most of the critics, the film also enjoyed commercial success as it grossed over $249 million worldwide easily making back its $48 million budget.

- The Blair Witch Project - $248 million

One of the most iconic horror movies to hit the big screen in more recent years comes in the form of The Blair Witch Project.

The Blair Witch Project was not only a success, but it changed the way the movies were marketed forever. It was the first film to really use a viral campaign to get people into cinemas.

Directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, the movie followed three film students who vanish after going into the woods to make a documentary about a local Blair Witch legend.

Grossing over $248 million worldwide, it remains one of the most successful independent films of all time.

- Paranormal Activity - $193 million

Paranormal Activity has become one of the most famous horror franchises in recent years, but the first film hit the big screen back in 2007.

Directed by Oren Peli, Paranormal Activity started life as an independent film project before being snapped up by Paramount Pictures.

Paranormal Activity was the film to see in the November of 2007, as it thrilled and chilled audiences around the world.

The movie was made for just $15,000 but went on to gross over $193 million by the end of its theatrical run.

Oculus is released 13th June.
