We have already looked back at a brief history of Bollywood as the movie making giant celebrates 100 years this year.
Over the last decade or so we have been seeing more and more Bollywood movies playing outside of India and enjoying success around the world.
So we have taken a look at some of the highest grossing Bollywood movies of all time.
- 3 Idiots (2009)
3 Idiots was released back in 2009 and is the most successful Bollywood movie in India as well as oversees.
Rajkumar Hirani was in the director's chair for the film, which was based on Five Point Someone - What not to do at IIT! by Chetan Bhagat.
Starring Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor the movie followed two friends as they search for their long lost companion.
The movie was a box office smash in India and broke record after record. But oversees the movie also did well - it was one of the few Indian films that found success in East Asia and China.
3 Idiots is one of just two Bollywood movies to break the 3 billion Indian rupee barrier - in total it make $66 million worldwide.
- Ek Tha Tiger (2012)
Ek Tha Tiger saw Kabir Khan return to the director's chair for this third feature film in 2012 as he tackled the action genre.
Starring Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif the movie follows RAW agent Tiger is on a mission to retrieve information from a scientist in Dublin.
The movie followed in the footsteps of 3 Idiots and become the second Bollywood movie to gross over three billion Indian rupees - it is the most successful film released by studio Yash Raj Films.
By the end of the theatrical run the movie had grossed $53 million at the global box office and is the second highest grossing Bollywood movie of all time.
- Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013)
Bollywood have had a big hit on their hands this year as well as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has enjoyed huge success.
The movie is just the second directorial outing for Ayan Mukerji as he teams up with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone - who take on the central roles of Kabir and Naina.
Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a coming of age story that charts the relationship between Kabir and Naina at two defining moments in their lives.
The movie has taken $46 million worldwide to become the third biggest Bollywood movie of all time. However it is the most successful Bollywood movie in overseas markets.
It became one of just six Bollywood movies to break the two billion Indian rupee barrier.
- Bodyguard (2011)
Another movie that has also grossed over two billion Indian rupees is action film Bodyguard.
Released back in 2011 Bodyguard was directed by Siddique and starred Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles.
The movie follows the daughter of a wealthy nobleman who secretly falls in love with her bodyguard.
There was huge excitement when this movie was released and it went on to become the highest opening day gross at the time.
Bodyguard also found success oversees and went ton to gross $40 million at the end of the theatrical run.
- Dabangg (2010)
Another action film that has enjoyed major box office success if Dabangg, which was released back in 2010.
Directed by Abhinav Singh Kashyap the movie saw Salman Khan once again in the lead role.
Dabangg followed a corrupt police officer who has problems with his family, gangsters and politicians.
And Dabangg broke some records as well as it took over from 3 Idiots as the highest opening week grossing Bollywood film.
By the end of the theatrical release it had taken $37 million and was the fourth biggest Bollywood movie - it has since been kicked down a spot.
Other high performing Bollywood movies at the box office include My Name Is Khan, Om Shanti Om and Singh is Kinng.
