Everyone knows that if you have a great script then your movie cannot go far wrong. However, it is quite often the unscripted moments in a movie that end up being some of the most iconic and memorable.
But do you know which of those moments were not in the script? We take a look at some of the best unscripted scenes - and boy are there plenty to choose from.
- Gun vs Sword - Raiders of the Lost Ark
Raider of the Lost Ark is one of the best Indiana Jones movies and has one of the franchises most memorable moments.
While Indy is searching for Marion when he comes face to face with a swordsman dressed in black.
However a day before they were due to shoot this long sword fight between the two characters, Harrison Ford was struck down by terrible food poisoning.
Ford was unable to shoot the scene and so just shoots the swordsman dead: it remains one of film's most iconic moments.
- 'You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat' - Jaws
It was back in 1975 when Jaws hit the big screen and it was a movie that really kicked off the blockbuster genre.
The Steven Spielberg movie is iconic for many reasons, but one of them is for a line that is delivered by the fantastic Roy Scheider.
Captain Brody has taken to the sea with Orca Captain Quint (Robert Shaw) looking for the killer great white shark.
When Brody gets his first look at the shark, all he can manage is 'You're gonna need a bigger boat' - a line made by Schneider.
- 'You Talkin' to Me?' - Taxi Driver
Taxi Driver remains one of the greatest movies ever to hit the big screen as Robert De Niro teamed up with director Martin Scorsese.
Travis Bickle remains one of De Niro's most famous character - and yet the film's most famous scene was not in the script.
The script said 'Travis talks to himself in the mirror' and De Niro was left to work his magic.
'You Talkin' To Me' was the result, and it remains one of the most quoted film lines of all time.
- Joker Clapping - The Dark Knight Rises
I have to admit that I was a little bit uncertain when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker in The Dark Knight - but anyone who doubted the casting was proved wrong.
Ledger delivered a knock out performance that couldn't have been more different to that of Jack Nicholson.
One of the joker's best and creepiest moments comes when he is being held at the police station.
While he is in the police station Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) is promoted to Commissioner. From his cell the Joker starts to slow clap - an action Ledger did on the spur of the moment.
- Private Ryan Remembering His Brothers - Saving Private Ryan
I like a good war movie, and Saving Private Ryan is one of the best as Spielberg returned to the director's chair.
The movie brought together the experienced Tom Hanks with the young Matt Damon, and towards the end of the movie share a fantastic scene together.
The pair are trading stories about their families and being back home: but the story that Damon delivers is completely made up.
The actor rattles off a complete tale about the Ryan brothers, and not a single word was in the script.
- Mr. Blonde Tortures Officer Nash - Reservoir Dogs
Reservoir Dogs remains one of Quentin Tarantino's finest films: hard to believe that this movie is twenty years old this year.
One of the film's most famous moments comes as Mr White (Matthew Madsen) is torturing Officer Nash.
Madsen didn't receive much direction from Tarantino about what to do after he had cut off Nash's ear, so all the lines and movements were made up by the actor.
- 'Heeeere’s Johnny!' - The Shining
We have already talked about classic lines being more off the cuff than planned, and we continue that theme.
'Heeeere’s Johnny!' is one of the most iconic film moments as a crazed Jack Nicholson crashes through a door after Shelley Duval.
But it was a line that was completely made up by Nicholson while the cameras were rolling... genius!!!!
