The 2015 awards season is well and truly underway and the Golden Globes will be handed out tonight in the first of the major award ceremonies… but who is going to win?
Some terrific movies and performances have been nominated in what is going to be a closely fought battle as no movie/actor seems to be the runaway favourite at the moment - it is also great news to see so many Brits in the mix for gongs as well.
With just hours to go until the Golden Globe winners are revealed we predict which actors and movies will walk away with the major prizes this year.
At the Golden Globes, we see the Best Picture category splint into two - Drama and Comedy & Musical - resulting in Birdman, which is a hot favourite to possibly scoop the Best Picture Oscar - in the latter category. And I think Birdman will see off competition from Into The Woods, St Vincent, Pride and The Grand Budapest Hotel to scoop the Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical Golden Globe.
The Best Picture, Drama is a little less clear cut as Foxcatcher, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, Boyhood and Selma are all nominated. However, I am going to back the British movie The Theory of Everything to triumph tonight.
Like film, the acting categories are also split into drama and musical & comedy resulting in some of the actors that will be in the running for the Best Actor Oscar to be in separate categories. The Best Actor, Drama sees three British stars nominated in the form of Eddie Redmayne, Benedict Cumberbatch and David Oyelowo, while Steve Carell and Jake Gyllenhaal are also in the mix. I am going to stick with the Brits as I have my fingers tightly crossed for Eddie Redmayne to triumph. He has been receiving rave reviews for his performance as Stephen Hawking in the biopic and this would be the biggest award of his acting career so far.
The Best Actor, Musical or Comedy category sees Michael Keaton, Bill Murray, Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz and Joaquin Phoenix all nominated. Keaton is a sure thing for an Oscar nomination for Best Actor later this week, and I think he will walk away triumphant tonight.
Julianne Moore, Rosamund Pike, Felicity Jones, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon make up the Best Actress, Drama category, and don’t be surprised if these are the five ladies in the running for the Best Actress Oscar. This is a strong field this year, but it is Julianne Moore for her performance in Still Alice that is being tipped to sweep the awards season and I expect her to triumph.
Moore is also nominated in the Best Actress, Musical or Comedy category alongside Amy Adams, Emily Blunt, Helen Mirren and youngster Quvenzhane Wallis. Adams’ performance in Big Eyes has been winning over the critics and I think she could well walk away with the Golden Globe tonight.
No movie is complete without a director and the Best Director category is another strong one with Ava DuVernay, Wes Anderson, David Fincher, Richard Linklater, and Alejandro González Iñárritu nominated for Selma, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Gone Girl, Boyhood and Birdman.
I think the battle is going to be between Linklater and Iñárritu, who have both enjoyed critical acclaim for their work. However, I think this could well be the year for Iñárritu and I am tipping him to triumph for Birdman.
The supporting categories are even less clear-cut and the gongs really could go anywhere tonight. Ethan Hawke, Robert Duvall, Edward Norton, J.K. Simmons, and Mark Ruffalo are all nominated for their work on Boyhood, The Judge, Birdman, Whiplash, and Foxcatcher, and I think that Norton could well scoop the Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe.
Jessica Chastain, Keira Knightley, Patricia Arquette, Meryl Streep, and Emma Stone have all be recognised for their work in A Most Violent Year, The Imitation Game, Boyhood, Into The Woods, and Birdman, and I really have no idea where this gong is going to go. Patricia Arquette is not an actress that you see in the awards mix very often and it would be great to see her triumph.
