Captain Phillips

Captain Phillips

The Best Supporting Actor category is also going to be a heard fought affair as we have a string of actors who have turned in excellent performances in 2013.

Best Supporting Actor does look a little bit more clear cut than the other acting categories - I think it is going to be a head to head between Michael Fassbender and Jared Leto.

- Barkhad Abdi - Captain Phillips

Before the release of Captain Phillips, Barkhad Abdi was a name that was unknown... now he is in the mix for some of the biggest acting awards.

And he is rightly in the mix as he delivers an excellent performance in Captain Phillips: hard to believe it is his big screen directorial debut.

Abdi took on the role of Muse, leader of the gang of Somali pirates that take over Captain Phillips' ship.

However, an incredibly interesting kidnapper/kidnapped relationship starts to develop, which does nothing but raise the tension even further.

- Daniel Bruhl - Rush

Daniel Bruhl has already appeared in movies such as Inglourious Basterds, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Fifth Estate, but Rush is the film that has really grabbed everyone's attention.

Rush is my favourite movie of 2013 and saw Bruhl take on the role of F1 driver Niki Lauda. The movie charted the rivalry between Lauda and James Hunt - a rivalry that really put this sport on the map.

Bruhl really does capture the obsessive nature of Lauda and the total drive he has to succeed. His battle back from horrific crash injuries is powerful stuff as he is driven back into a car by the success of Hunt.

Rush has given Bruhl his first Golden Globe award, and that has been followed up by a nod at the Baftas.

- Bradley Cooper - American Hustle

Bradly Cooper is one of the brightest stars shining in Hollywood at the moment, as this is the second consecutive year that he has been in the awards.

Last year he was being recognised for his work in Silver Linings Playbook, this year he has reunited with director David O.Russell for American Hustle.

Cooper turns in another excellent performance as FBI agent Richie DiMaso, who finds himself out of his depth when he teams up with two con artists.

O.Russell really does seem to get the best out of Cooper, and it is great to see him back in the awards mix.

- Michael Fassbender - 12 Years A Slave

I personally would love to see Michael Fassbender win as he delivers such a chilling and powerful performance in 12 Years A Slave.

12 Years A Slave marks the third time that he has worked with director Steve McQueen, having starred in Hunger and Shame.

He takes on the role of Edwin Epps - a plantation owner who believes he has the right to abuse his slaves.

This performance really will send a chill down your spine and sees Fassbender at his very best.

- Jared Leto - Dallas Buyers Club

Jared Leto is another actor who has been receiving praise and picking up prizes for his role of Dallas Buyers Club.

The movie tells the story of AIDS sufferer Ron Woodroof, who worked around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need.

Leto takes on the role of AIDS sufferer Rayon and lost thirty pounds for the part.

Rayon shows off a very different side to Leto as an actor as he delivers an incredibly moving and poignant performance.

Winner: Michael Fassbender - 12 Years A Slave. He was scandalously overlooked for a Best Actor nomination for Shame, so this should be his year.
