To celebrate the release of We’re The Millers on Blu-ray and DVD on 16th December, we thought it might be fitting to look at the funniest tattoos in films. There is only one place we could start.
- Dude Where’s My Car (2000)
About the movie: In an outlandish stoner adventure, comedy duo Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott play two potheads, Jesse and Chester, who’s partying have left them without any memory of where they have left their car. Retracing their steps from the night before, Jesse and Chester encounter angry girlfriends, a group of alien- seeking nerds, and a transsexual stripper from whom they have stolen a suitcase full of money.
The tattoo: No epic night of partying with best friends could be complete without matching tattoos. Jesse and Chester discover their back tattoos with their favourite catch-phrase: 'sweet, dude' as they piece together the night before.
The reaction: Jesse: 'Dude! You got a tattoo!'
Chester: 'So do you, dude! Dude, what does my tattoo say?'
Jesse: 'Sweet! What about mine?'
Chester: 'Dude! What does mine say?'
- Bridesmaids (2011)
About the movie: Featuring an insane brother-sister roommate duo, cringe-worthy moments, and a bridal shower gone wrong, Bridesmaids chronicles the trials of maid of honour Annie’s life as it spirals out of control in a hysterical fashion.
The tattoo: Who could possibly turn down a free tattoo, especially from a man operating his shop from inside a van? Much to Annie’s dismay, in a demonstration of her stupidity, Annie’s roommate, Brynn, gets a hideous tattoo that quickly becomes infected.
The explanation: Brynn: 'It's a Mexican drinking worm. It's like a Native American symbol meaning wasted.'
- We’re the Millers (2013)
About the movie: An innuendo fuelled depiction of a new kind of dysfunctional family, We’re the Millers follows the creation of a fake family who come together on a drug smuggling road trip. The misfit family’s squeaky-clean facade is constantly tested as they are faced with a number of challenges, hilarity ensues.
The tattoo: Acting like a real family, Miller parents David and Rose insist on chatting with fake daughter Casey’s new boyfriend whose chest is decorated with a misspelled tattoo.
The reaction: David Miller: 'You have no regrets? Like, not even a single letter?'
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
About the movie: This cheeky comedy about a recent breakup follows loveable sap Peter’s escape to Hawaii to forget about long-time celebrity girlfriend, Sarah Marshall. Unfortunately for him, Sarah Marshall and new boyfriend, eccentric rock star Aldous Snow, happen to show up at the same resort.
The tattoo: Aldous Snow’s collection of tattoos becomes fuel for ridicule in a late-night fight between the unlikely couple.
The reaction: Sarah Marshall: [pointing at tattoos] 'And you know what? Let me tell you something about these tattoos, okay. That is Buddhist, that is Nordic, that is Hindu, that’s just gibberish. They are completely conflicting ideologies, and that does not make you a citizen of the world, it makes you full of sh*t!'
- Fanboys (2009)
About the movie: An homage to fandom everywhere, Fanboys chronicles the journey a group of old friends who seek to break into Skywalker Ranch to steal a copy of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace before its theatrical release so that friend Linus can see the film before he dies of cancer. Complete with a pit stop to Iowa to fight Trekkies, this journey is one for the books.
The tattoo: Amidst a tense battle between Trekkies and Star Wars fans, Roach reveals his allegiance to the Rebel Alliance by showing off his extensive Star Wars tattoos, complete with a back piece of Jar Jar Binks.
The explanation: Roach: 'Jar Jar Binks, that guy’s gonna be the shit!'
- Alpha Dog (2007)
The Movie: Inspired by the true story of Jesse James Hollywood, the youngest to ever be on the FBI’s most wanted list, Alpha Dog follows the gang activity of a group of Southern California teenagers.
The tattoo: Like any other 20 something on the fast track to looking like a badass, Frankie covers his body in meaningless tattoos. The Chinese symbols on his bicep say nothing about crime, but instead read the Chinese word for 'ice skating.'
The reaction: Frankie: "They say 'squiggle, box, exploding star.' That has great meaning for me."
- The Hangover Part II
About the movie: Once again the wolf pack finds themselves with a massive hangover and no memory of the night before. Prior to Stu’s wedding in Thailand, the gang unites for a quiet night on the beach that turns into an all-out fiasco filled with drug dealing monkeys, tattoo parlours, and a missing brother- in- law.
The tattoo: Signs of a crazy party the night before are left all over the grimy Bangkok hotel room... and Stu’s face, which has become the new canvas for a tribal tattoo.
The reaction: Tattoo Joe: The tattoo? You love it?
Stu: Uh...no! Actually, I hate it.
Tattoo Joe: No refunds. Get the f*ck out!
- That’s My Boy (2012)
About the movie: In an extreme example of bad parenting, single teen dad Donny raised his son Todd on his own. Much to his dismay, years later, Donny comes crashing back into Todd’s life the day before his wedding. In reconnecting with his son, Donny is forced to see the effects of his bad parenting.
The tattoo: Lacking rules and a stable parental figure as a child, Todd was allowed to get a New Kids on the Block tattoo across his back. Unfortunately, as he grew the tattoo stretched out and now the members of the band look like caricatures.
The reaction: Donny: [laughs] The New Kids on the Block! The heads are all warped!
Todd: That's because I got it in third grade, my body grew!
