A little earlier this week, we popped an exclusive first look clip of upcoming movie Papillon (released Friday December 21) on our social media, showcasing Charlie Hunnam and Rami Malek in the leading roles. Here's a little reminder of the preview:

Challenging audiences to ask themselves the question of what exactly they'd do to get their life back if it were to be wrongfully taken from them, Papillon is based on the international best-selling autobiography by Henri Charrière.

The film follows the story of a man - Henri "Papillon" Charrière (Hunnam) - who's framed for murder and condemned to live the rest of his days on Devil's Island, in a notorious penal colony.

Though he's facing the biggest challenge of his life, he refuses to give in and is determined to fight for his freedom. Fellow convict Louis Dega (Malek) has offered to finance Papillon's escape in exchange for his protection, and the two form an unlikely bond of friendship which looks set to stand the test of time.

Danish director Michael Noer makes his international feature debut with Papillon, working on a script from writer Aaron Guzikowski, and alongside executive producer Danny Dimbort.

Whether or not the modern take of the story will be able to stand alongside the original film, which starred Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman and was released back in 1973, remains to be seen. If this clip is anything to go by however, it looks like we're in for a treat.

Papillon comes to cinemas across the UK on Friday, December 21, 2018 courtesy of Signature Entertainment.
