Rating: 3/5
Viggo Mortensen has chosen interesting movie projects over the last few years that has seen him move from genre to genre.
This week he is back on the big screen as he teams up with first time feature filmmaker Ana Piterbarg in Everybody Has A Plan.
The movie sees the Oscar nominated actor take on the role of twins as Piterbarg mixes elements of crime drama and psychological thriller together.
Everybody Has A Plan tells the story of Agustín (Mortensen), a man desperate to abandon what for him has become, after years of living in Buenos Aires, a very frustrating existence.
After the death of his twin brother, Pedro, Agustín decides to start a new life, adopting the identity of his brother and returning to the mysterious region of the Delta, in the Tigre, where they lived when they were boys.
However, shortly after his return, Agustín will find himself unwillingly involved in the dangerous criminal world that was a part of his brother’s life.
I have been a huge fan of Mortensen for many years and some of the films that has taken on more recently have really shown off this actor as a fine talent.
Playing twins in a film is always tricky but Mortensen pulls it off in style - not to mention he really is the driving force of this movie.
It is his performance that really will keep you watching; he has always been an actor that demands you attention but this dual role heightens that further.
He switches between the two brothers with total ease and it is fantastic to watch.
For Ana Piterbarg this is an incredibly solid debut as she weaves the strands of crime drama with psychological undertones really well.
But it is really with the help of Mortensen that this story is shaped, you feel that this was a very collaborative project between actor and director.
Piterbarg clearly has a talent behind the camera and it will be interesting to see what she does next.
As for Mortensen he is the type of actor that is not interested in success or fame and just wants to take on projects that are interesting to him.
There are not many Hollywood stars who would tackle an Argentinean movie in Spanish but Mortensen is an actor who works to the beat of his own drum - which is rather refreshing.
