Emma Watson

Emma Watson

When Emma Watson first hit our screens way back in 2001 in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the young eleven year old became a household as Hermione Granger, the bushy-haired, goody-two shoes young girl.

Since then she has slowly taken up different roles that have pulled her away from the character that made her so successful.

And to celebrate her most recent (and grown up) role as (a parodied version of) herself in This Is The End (in cinemas across the UK from 28th June), we have charted some of her more diverse roles of late.

- Ballet Shoes

After the fifth instalment of the Harry Potter franchise, (The Order of the Phoenix) hit screens in 2007, Watson appeared in the BBC adaptation of Ballet Shoes as Pauline Fossil.

The eldest of three daughters, Pauline is a talented dancer and actress whose success inflates her ego and leads to her eventual downfall.

Watson excelled in her first notable role outside of the Harry Potter series, a role that saw her appear as a direct contrast to Hermione.

- My Week With Marilyn

After leaving Hermione behind once the Harry Potter series came to a close, Watson next starred in a film that saw Watson star alongside big names such as Kenneth Branagh and Dame Judi Dench.

Playing Lucy, a sassy wardrobe assistant who falls for Colin (played by Eddie Redmayne), this role perfectly enabled Watson to take up a more grown up role.

- The Perks of Being a Wallflower

A coming-of-age comedy drama based on the novel of the same name by Stephen Chbosky, Watson starred as Sam, a high school girl desperately trying to reinvent herself before going to college.

The film deals with themes such as drugs, sex and sexuality, and violence in a film that was both critically hailed and a commercial success.

We saw a very different side to Watson as an actress as she really got under this skin of quite a damaged character.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is such a well loved book and Chbosky and the cast captured its spirit in the film.

- The Bling Ring

Watson’s latest release saw her take on the real life story of the Bling Ring. A group of fame-obsessed teenagers who targeted celebrity homes and robbed them.

Directed by Sofia Coppola, Watson plays Nicki, a valley girl who is also one of the aforementioned fame-obsessed members of the group. The role is yet another step away from Hermione for Watson.

- This Is The End

This week see Watson tackle a comedy role in the form of This Is The End - which is directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

This Is The End follows six friends trapped in a house after a series of strange and catastrophic events devastate Los Angeles.

As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside.

Eventually, they are forced to leave the house, facing their fate and the true meaning of friendship and redemption.

Watson is joined on the cast list by Rogen, James Franco, Jonah Hill and Jay Baruchel as they all play slightly exaggerated versions of themselves.

It is great to see Watson moving from genre to genre and she hold her own well alongside more experienced comedy actors.

This Is The End is out now.
