There are some truly terrific directors around at the moment and 2013 sees some of the most exciting return to the director's chair.
And there are a whole host of filmmakers that we are looking forward to seeing return to what they do best - not to mention that some of their movies promise to set the big screen alight.
So we take a look at some of the directors to watch out for this year.
- Neill Blomkamp
Neill Blomkamp is one of the director's that everyone is keen to see return as he delivers his second film Elysium in September.
Blomkamp grabbed everyone's attention back in 2009 with his stunning debut District 9 - not only was it one of the best sci-fi movies in years but it also went on to pick up a Best Picture Oscar nomination.
Since them Blomkamp has been very quiet but he is set to return with Elysium - another science fiction project.
Once again he has penned the screenplay but this time around he has teamed up with the fantastic Matt Damon.
This futuristic film sees Damon on a quest to bring equality to the world he lives in.
The special effects in District 9 were one of the strongest aspects of the film and it looks like Blomkamp is going to repeat that success with Elysium - the first trailer really does look amazing.
Elysium is released 20th September.
- Nicolas Winding Refn
Nicolas Winding Refn knocked it out of the park two years ago when he delivered the stylish and fantastic Drive.
We haven't seen him in the director's chair since... but now he has reunited with Ryan Gosling for Only God Forgives.
I have to admit that this is one of the movies that I am really looking forward to as this director/actor team is a formidable one.
This is another movie that has a terrific trailer and it promises to be brutally violent as well as look fantastic.
Refn is the type of director who has a unique visual style and is not afraid to think that sometimes less is more - worked well for Drive.
Only God Forgives will play at the Cannes Film Festival and will be released later this year.
- Alan Taylor
TV fans will know director Alan Taylor as the man behind a whole host of Game of Thrones episodes - which is one of the best TV shows around at the moment.
His career has seen him work predominately in television but he will be returning to the big screen later this year with Thor: The Dark World.
Taylor takes over the director's chair from Kenneth Branagh for the second standalone Thor movie.
Last week we were treated to the first trailer for the movie and it looks like it is going to be one of the blockbusters not to miss.
Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are just two of the actors who will be returning to their roles of Thor and Loki. And actors on the film have hinted that Taylor does bring his Game of Thrones flair to the latest Marvel movie.
Thor is called back into action and has to save all the Nine Realms from Malekith and the army that he leads.
Thor: The Dark World is released 30th October.
- Guillermo Del Toro
It was back in 2008 and Hellboy II: The Golden Army when we last saw Guillermo Del Toro in the director's chair... but now he is back with the highly anticipated Pacific Rim.
Del Toro has spent the last couple of years with his producing hat on but now he is excitingly back in the director's chair as he takes a stab at science fiction with his new movie.
Del Toro is one of the most visual directors of his generation as he is able to create wonderful worlds and characters and even when he tackles a blockbuster project he keeps this individual style.
2013 is the year of the science fiction film and Pacific Rim looks set to be one of the stand out projects - and one that I cannot wait to see.
Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day are on the cast list and they have to battle back when aliens invade.
And is doesn't look like del Toro will be taking another lengthy spell away from directing as Pinocchio and Crimson Peak are on the horizon.
Pacific Rim is released 12th July.
- Zack Snyder
Zack Snyder is a director who has brought us terrific movies such as 300 and Watchmen. But he is also the director who brought us Sucker Punch - it was a god awful movie but it did look great.
This summer sees him back in the chair as he bring Superman back to the big screen in Man of Steel.
Yes we haven't seen Superman since 2006 but Snyder has teamed up with producer Christopher Nolan and writer David S. Goyer to reboot this franchise.
We have been promised a movie that is not as dark as the Batman trilogy but it is certainly going to be the darkest Superman movie that we have ever seen.
But it is the visual aspect of the movie that I am excited to see as Snyder just has a knack of making his movies look fantastic and almost beautiful - 300 is just the most perfect example.
Man Of Steel is released 14th June.
- M. Night Shyamalan
M. Night Shyamalan was one of the most exciting director when he delivered films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable. However over the last few years his films have been a little under whelming.
However this summer he is looking to get his career back on track with After Earth, a movie that sees him team up with Will and Jaden Smith.
After Earth is another sci-fi project to get excited about as it is the first time Will and Jaden Smith have worked together since The Pursuit of Happyness.
Shyamalan has also had a hand in penning the script and he is famed for including some terrific twists.
After Earth is released 7th June
Other directors that we are excited to see back in the chair is David Twohy and Richard Curtis while Joseph Gordon Levitt is making his directorial debut with Don Jon.
