British actors have always enjoyed success in the States but more recently it seems that more and more home grown actors are taking on some of the biggest roles in U.S. film.
And 2013 is no different as there are a whole host of British actors who have very exciting and successful years ahead of them with some great projects on the horizon.
We take a look at some of the British actors who are whipping up a story on the other side of the pond this year.
- Henry Cavill
The role of Superman is one of the most iconic of all time and Henry Cavill is going to take over that role when the franchise is rebooted this summer.
Man of Steel will see the actor team up with visionary filmmaker Zack Snyder as the popular Superman franchise is rebooted.
The role of Clark Kent is set to be the biggest part of Cavill’s acting career and it will send his star rocketing this summer.
The movie is produced by Christopher Nolan - who knows one or two things about brining a comic book to the big screen - and it is set to be a little darker than Superman movies of the past.
This will be the first big screen outing for Cavill since the not so Great Cold Light of Day but this will cement the actor as a great action hero.
Man of Steel is released 14th June
- Benedict Cumberbatch
A British actor who is creating quite a storm this week is Benedict Cumberbatch as he is one of the fantastic new additions to the cast list of Star Trek Into Darkness.
He takes on the role of John Harrison in the J.J. Abrams directed movie in what is the biggest film role of his career.
It is great to see Cumberbatch in a role such as Harrison as it really shows off his villainous side - which is something that we have not seen from the actor so far.
And this movie kicks off a super busy year for Cumberbatch as we are going to see him in a series of movies including Twelve Years A Slave, August: Osage County and The Fifth Estate.
But this Christmas will see him embody the character of dragon Smaug in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - a movie that is set to be another huge box office success.
And as if all that is not enough he has also been cast in Crimson Peak, the new project for Guillermo Del Toro that will also star Emma Stone and Jessica Chastain.
Star Trek Into Darkness is out now.
- Carey Mulligan
Carey Mulligan already has a Best Actress Oscar nomination under her belt but it has been a while since we have seen her on the big screen - Shame at the beginning of 2012 was her last movie.
But 2013 sees her back as she is set to take on the role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann’s big screen adaptation of the much loved novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Mulligan is working with Luhrmann for the first time on this project and she will also team up with Leonardo DiCaprio and Joel Edgerton.
She is also set to star in Inside Llewyn Davis, which is the latest film from Oscar winning filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen.
While we will not be able to see the movie until January of next year the film will be competing for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and should be a major awards contender by the end of 2013.
She is also about to start working on Hold on to Me a thriller that sees her team up with director James Marsh and actor Robert Pattinson.
The Great Gatsby is released 16th May. Inside Llewyn Davis is released 24th January 2014.
- Idris Elba
We are huge fans of Idris Elba here at FemaleFirst and he has fond success in both TV and film in the States - he won a Golden Globe earlier this year for his role in BBC series Luther.
But there are some exciting movie projects on the horizon this year and he will be back this summer with sci-fi epic Pacific Rim.
The movie marks the return to Guillermo Del Toro to the director’s chair for the first time since the second Hellboy film that was released back in 2008.
Pacific Rim follows a group of humans who fight back with giant piloted robots when aliens invade the earth.
2013 is turning in a fantastic year for sci-fi fans and Pacific Rim is promising to be one of the films that is not to be missed - not to mention it will make a nice change from all of the superhero films that are coming our way.
Speaking of superhero movies Elba will be reprising the role Heimdall in Thor: The Dark World, the second stand alone Thor movie.
The British actor has also completed work on Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom - where he will play Nelson Mandela - in a film that chronicles the life from simple beginnings to becoming president of South Africa.
Pacific Rim is released 12th July. Thor: The Dark World is released 30th October.
- Tom Hiddleston
We haven’t seen Hiddleston on the big screen since the billion dollar success of Avengers Assemble this time last year… but the actor is back in 2013.
He is set to reprise the role of Loki this autumn with Thor: The Dark World - which sees him reunite with Chris Hemsworth.
This is the second stand alone Thor movie and it is already one of the most highly anticipated films of the year.
We are also going to be seeing him in Only Lovers Left Alive and London Project while he is currently filming The Muppets… Again!
Thor: The Dark World is released 30th October.
- Luke Evans
Luke Evans is another actor who is well and truly on the rise and he has a very busy and exciting year ahead of him. And his work starts next week as Fast & Furious 6 hits the big screen.
Evans is one of the new additions to the Fast & Furious franchise as he is set to play villain Owen Show. The franchise has being going from strength to strength in recent years and it will be looking to follow in the very successful footsteps of Fast Five.
And Evans will have not one blockbuster outing this year but two as he is also set to take on the role of Bard the Bowman in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
This will be the first time that we see Bard in The Hobbit franchise but he will also be appearing in There and Back Again in 2014.
Last week it was also revealed that Evans has been cast in the lead role as The Crow is being remade by director F. Javier Gutuerrez.
Fast & Furious 6 is released 17th May. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is released 13th December.
Other actors to watch out for this year include Felicity Jones, Charlie Hunnam, Ben Barnes and Chris O’Dowd.
