Amber Heard & Johnny Depp ath Black Mass BFI London Film Festival Premiere

Black Mass sees Depp return to the gangster genre as he takes on the role of Whitey Bulger in the new film, which sees Scott Cooper back in the director's chair.

Cooper has brought us movies such as Crazy Heart and Out of the Furnace and Black Mass will mark the first time that he has collaborated with Oscar nominated actor Depp.

Depp was joined on the red carpet last night by his wife Amber Heard, Cooper and co-star Benedict Cumberbatch, who takes on the role of Whitey's brother Billy Bulger. The British actor was also joined by his wife Sophie Hunter.

Black Mass has been met well by the critics since it received its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival last month and is being tipped as a potential Oscar contender.

Depp's central performance is already gaining a lot of praise and we could well see him in the Best Actor Oscar race once again - this would be his first nomination since Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Cooper has brought together a terrific cast for the film, as Depp and Cumberbatch are joined by Kevin Bacon, Joel Edgerton, Dakota Johnson, Peter Sarsgaard, Jesse Plemons, and Cory Stoll.

In 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent John Connolly (Edgerton) persuades Irish mobster James 'Whitey' Bulger (Depp) to collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob.

Black Mass tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiralled out of control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

This was the first weekend of the BFI London Film Festival 2015 and we have already been treated to some star-studied red carpets, including Suffragette, The Program. and High-Rise.

Black Mass is set to be one of the must-see movies of the festival and the autumn and it is great to see Depp on the red carpet in London.

Black Mass is released 27th November.
