It was a night full of shocks at the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills last night (January 6, 2019), which saw the brilliant Bohemian Rhapsody take home the award for Best Picture (Drama) despite being up against firm favourite, A Star Is Born. Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman and If Beale Street Could Talk were all also nominated.
Not only did it take down the competition in that category, but the film's lead actor Rami Malek took home the accolade for Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Motion Picture for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury, winning out against strong competition including Bradley Cooper for A Star Is Born, John David Washington for BlacKkKlansman, Lucas Hedges for Boy Erased and Willem Dafoe for At Eternity's Gate.
Glenn Close also came out on top thanks to her role in The Wife, beating A Star Is Born's Lady Gaga, Destroyer's Nicole Kidman, Can You Ever Forgive Me?'s Melissa McCarthy and A Private War's Rosamund Pike in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Motion Picture category. Could this be the elevation the star needs ahead of this year's Oscars to see her pick up her very first Academy Award?
Gaga did manage to take home one of the night's awards for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture thanks to her work on Shallow, alongside Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt, but this was the only win for A Star Is Born, which was predicted to take multiple Globes in the ceremony.
Over in the television categories, British actor and Bodyguard lead Richard Madden also shocked by taking on some huge names and winning in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Drama Television Series. Ozark's Jason Bateman, Homecoming's Stephan James, Pose's Billy Porter and The Americans's Matthew Rhys were all also nominated.
What wasn't shocking however, was Sandra Oh's win in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Television Series category. It's just a shame Killing Eve's Jodie Comer wasn't also nominated!
