While last year (2021) was great for superhero movies, with releases such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Black Widow, and of course Spider-Man: No Way Home, 2022 has a lot to offer those who love this super-powered genre. Here are seven superhero-based films releasing this year (2022), along with their UK release dates.
The Batman - Released March 4th
Batman is a beloved and iconic DC character, whose story has been told time and time again. This year however, will see Robert Pattinson take on the role of the Caped Crusader.
The Batman is set to focus on a younger version of Bruce Wayne, and the trailers show Pattinson’s billionaire look rather dark and brooding, but seemingly in a way we’ve never seen before.
The story will reportedly centre on The Riddler (Paul Dano), which is brilliant as this character hasn’t seen much light in DC’s more recent live-action films.
It also appears we'll be seeing more of the 'World's Greatest Detective' in investigative action than ever before, which can only be a good thing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – Released May 6th
After the chaotic and rather spectacular events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the second Doctor Strange movie is set to be a film that goes further than Marvel have ever gone before, and continues to test the theory and idea of the Multiverse.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees Benedict Cumberbatch return as Doctor Stephen Strange, but after No Way Home, his world appears to be in total disarray; so, the sorcerer recruits a familiar and beloved character to help him fix everything: Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen).
Of course, after the events of Disney+ original series WandaVision, can we really be sure that Wanda is someone who can be trusted with such power?
DC League of Super Pets - Released May 20th
One of DC's upcoming movie is an animated tale following the pets of some of the brand's most iconic heroes.
DC League of Super-Pets follows Krypto (Dwayne Johnson), Superman's (John Krasinski) similarly-powered canine companion who, after the disappearance of the Justice League, recruits other animals with some incredible abilities to help him save the world's best heroes.
The cast for this feature also includes Kevin Hart, Keanu Reeves and Natasha Lyonne; a truly star-studded affair.
Thor: Love and Thunder – Released July 8th
Thor: Love and Thunder is a Marvel movie with a whole host of theories and conversations surrounding it, as not much information has been shared about the upcoming release.
Chris Hemsworth will of course be returning to his role as the God of Thunder himself, but he isn’t the only familiar face fans will be seeing. Natalie Portman will also be appearing as Thor's former flame, Jane Foster.
After Portman recently held Thor’s hammer at Comic-Con, it's been rumoured that Foster will be taking on the role of Female Thor. Hopefully Marvel reveal details soon, as fans are dying to know what this sequel will be about and, just who else will be involved.
Black Adam – Released July 29th
Black Adam sees beloved actor and former wrestler, Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, take on the role of anti-hero Black Adam, a very intriguing character for the Hobbs & Shaw star.
While details of the forthcoming film are yet to be revealed, fans have seen a couple of videos introducing the character to DC, as well as a video via Johnson’s Instagram account celebrating the end of filming for Black Adam.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) - Released October 7th
The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is on its way, and will be arriving in October of this year.
Fans seem excited to see what Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) next chapter will include, especially after a first look clip was released about a month ago; the video saw the return of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), and the re-introduction of Spider-Man 2099 to the franchise.
We can also assume thanks to the title, that this isn't the only Spider-Verse sequel that will be headed our way! Expect to be left on a major cliffhanger when this one wraps up...
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – Released December 16th
Aquaman 2 is, at the moment, quite far away, but it is still drawing much interest from fans, as returning director James Wan promises a more serious, but still thrilling and entertaining feature.
Recently, Jason Momoa, who plays the titular hero, announced that the film has finished shooting, which is an exciting development.
While the plot of Aquaman 2 remains clandestine for now, we do know that Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) will return, and will be a more prominent villain than he was in 2018’s Aquaman.
