Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World

I don’t know about you but there is nothing more exciting on the big screen than a good old humdinger of a fight - and boy have there be some good ones throughout the year.

Yes, 2013 is coming to a close and it really has been a super exciting twelve months at the movies; not to mention there have been plenty of fisticuffs as well.

We take a look at some of the fight scenes that have really stood out from the rest so far this year - there could well be one or two more before 2013 is through.

- Thor vs Malekith - Thor: The Dark World

No Marvel movie is complete without a great fight scene as the hero finally comes face to face with the bad guy and they go a few rounds. And that is exactly what happened in Thor: The Dark World as the God of Thunder takes on Malekith.

Thor: The Dark World sees Chris Hemsworth return to the title role, while Christopher Eccleston was one of the new faces on the cast list as baddie Malekith; this character was appearing in a Marvel movie for the first time.

The end of the film sees Thor and Malekith go head to head in Greenwich, London; but a portal sees them do battle on Svartalfheim, before Thor ends up on the Underground - which is one of the funniest scenes in the film.

This good vs. evil duel is one of the most action packed sequences in the film… but does Thor get off the underground and back to Greenwich in time to stop Malekith from plunging the whole universe into darkness?

- Keller Drover vs Alex Jones - Prisoners

Granted, Drover vs. Jones is less of a fight and more of one handing the other a beating - however, this is not a fight that could be overlooked.

Hugh Jackman takes on the role of Drover in the tense drama, a father who is driven to take the law into his own hands when his young daughter goes missing. Convinced that Jones - played by Paul Dano - has something to do with it he kidnaps him in a bid to force the truth out of him.

When Jones insists that he doesn’t know where his daughter is, Dover goes to work on him. This is one of the most series of scenes that you will see on the big screen this year, as well as being on of the most uncomfortable to watch.

However, both Jackman and Dano play it perfectly in what really is a fantastic movie.

- Django vs Candieland Henchmen - Django Unchained

When it comes to love there is nothing that a film’s hero won’t do for his wife… and that is exactly the case for Django in Django Unchained.

The movie saw Quentin Tarantino return to the director’s chair while Oscar winner Jamie Foxx took on the role of Django in this American Western.

No Western is complete without a shoot out, and that is exactly what happens as Django takes on the henchmen of Calvin J Candie: the man who has his wife as a slave.

Django displays some fine shooting skills as he kills just about everyone in his path… that is until his wife Broomhilda is taken hostage at gunpoint.

The battle is fast paced and bloody - which is what we have come to expect when Quentin Tarantino is at the helm.

- Max Da Costa vs Kruger - Elysium

Elysium is one of the best movies that I have seen so far this year as Neill Blomkamp made his much-awaited return to the director’s chair after thrilling everyone with his debut District 9.

The movie is set on earth were there is death, poverty and no healthcare, and on Elysium where the rich live in paradise where there is no such thing as sickness. Max Da Costa is on a quest to make life more equal for the people on earth as he faces his own death.

The climax of the film sees the hero Max (Matt Damon) doing battle with mercenary Kruger (Sharlto Copley). Max and Kruger are both powered by an exoskeleton, making the final fight between the pair even more bloody and brutal.

Kruger is the only thing standing between Max and the opportunity to making the world an equal place and perhaps saving the lives of the people that he cares about the most.

- Jaegers vs. Kaijus- Pacific Rim

There is a fight at just about every turn in Pacific Rim as the Earth is under threat from an alien invasion.

The Kaijus emerged from a one-dimensional portal on the floor of the Pacific Ocean and have tried to wipe out human life on the planet. To combat the monsters the human race build the Jaegers to fight back… and fight back they do.

There are a series of fantastic fights between the Jaegers and the Kaijus: the opening battle where we are introduced to the central character of Raleigh Becket being one of the highlights.

The first outing for Raleigh in the Gipsy Danger is another fantastic moment as this old Jaegers shows that it is as combat ready as the more advance models; it is also the moment where Raleigh and Mako Mori show that they can be a real fighting team.

The battle scenes in this movie are just terrific as director Guillermo del Toro delivers another wonderful looking movie.

Other great fight scenes include Wolverine vs just about everyone in The Wolverine and Spock vs Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness.
