Thor: The Dark World

Thor: The Dark World

The summer season of film may only just have got underway but with the release of Thor: The Dark World this week we are already looking ahead to what the autumn will hold.

And there are some terrifically exciting movies on the horizon from blockbuster to sci-fi to rom-com and blockbusters to biopic - we take a look at some of the movies that we are already very excited about.

- Elysium - released 20th September.

If there is one movie that is not to be missed this autumn then it has to be Elysium as Neill Blomkamp is back in the director’s chair for the first time since District 9.

District 9 was one of the best directorial debuts of all time and he return to the science fiction genre with Elysium - which sees him team up with the fantastic Matt Damon.

Blomkamp has also penned the futuristic screenplay while Jodie Foster, William Fichtner, Sharlto Copley and Alice Braga are also on the cast list.

The movie is set in 2154 and the rich live on a man made space station while the poor live on a ruined earth. Damon takes on the role of Max who takes on a mission that could bring equality to this unfair world.

Elysium is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2013 as everyone is excited to see what is next for Blomkamp after the success of his debut.

It caused quite a stir when footage was shown at Comic Con next year and that excitement looks only set to mount as the release date creeps closer.

- Rush - released 13th September.

Another director who is returning to the director’s chair this autumn is Ron Howard - we haven’t seen him helm a movie since the terrible comedy The Dilemma.

I am happy to say that he is leaving comedy behind as he brings Formula 1 biopic Rush to the big screen that follows the life of Niki Lauda and his rivalry with James Hunt.

Two incredibly exciting young acting talents will take on the central roles as Daniel Bruhl and Chris Hemsworth will play Lauda and Hunt - it really is set to be a mouth-watering rivalry.

Peter Morgan has reunited with Howard to pen the screenplay while Natalie Dormer and Olivia Wilde make up an exciting cast list.

The movie will take a close look at the crash that almost claimed Lauda’s life in 1976 and how, just weeks later, he was back in a car ready to challenge Hunt once more.

Rush is set to be one of the most high octane movies of the autumn and it is going to be exciting to see F1 on the big screen.

- Runner, Runner - released 27th September

2013 has already been a very successful year for Ben Affleck after picking up the Best Picture Oscar for his last outing Argo.

He will be back on the big screen later this year as he leads the cast in crime thriller Runner, Runner - a movie that sees him team up with director Brad Furman.

Affleck is just on the cast list this time around and sees Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie and Justin Timberlake alongside him.

The movie follows a businessman who owns an offshore gambling operation finds his relationship with his protégé reaching a boiling point.

- Ender’s Game - released 25th October.

2013 is all about science fiction and none that is not to be missed later this year is the big screen adaptation of Ender’s Game.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Orson Scott Card and sees Gavin Hood back in the director’s chair - he has also penned the screenplay.

This movie is an exciting blend of well established acting talent along with some great young names who are really making a name for themselves.

Asa Butterfield will take on the central role of Ender Wiggin while Abigail Breslin and Hailee Steinfeld are joined by Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley.

70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.

- Thor: The Dark World - 30th October

The excitement of autumn movies was kicked off because of the release of the Thor: The Dark World trailer being released this week - sadly we will have quite a wait until the movie hits the big screen.

Chris Hemsworth is back in the title role for the second stand alone Thor movie while Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman and Tom Hiddleston are all also back.

There is one exciting new addition to the cast list and that is Christopher Eccleston as he is set to take on the role of villain Malekith.

But it is all change in the director’s chair as Alan Taylor takes over the helm from Kenneth Branagh and the movie promises to be bigger and better than the original.

In the aftermath of Avengers Assemble, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos...but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness.

Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

Thor: The Dark World will continue phase two of Marvel’s movies and is set to be one of the biggest and most exciting films of the autumn.

- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - 22nd November

Another movie that everyone is already talking about is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - the second film in the trilogy.

The Hunger Games was a huge success when it hit the big screen last summer and showed that Jennifer Lawrence was also a blockbuster heroine as well as being the queen of drama projects.

Catching Fire picks up where the first film let off as Katniss and Peeta’s celebrations are cut short when they are sent back into the arena for the Quarter Quell.

Lawrence is back as Katniss while Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson and Elizabeth are all back. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin and Jena Malone are the big new additions to the cast list.

But it is all change in the director’s chair as Francis Lawrence is at the helm this time around. We have already been treated to a trailer for this movie and it promises to be as action packed and exciting as the first.

Other movies to watch out for include Seventh Son, Gravity, Carrie, About Time and Riddick.
