American Hustle is one of the movies that has been whipping up a storm since the beginning of the autumn, as it marks the return of David O.Russell returns to the director’s chair.
In recent years, O.Russell has delivered great films such as The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, and now he brings together a terrific cast - many of whom he has worked with in the past - in a film that is being tipped as a major Oscar contender.
O.Russell is famed for making character driven films and American Hustle looks set to see him continue that trend as the trailer shows that it is a film that is packed with fascinating and larger than life characters.
American Hustle sees Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, while The Fighter co-stars Christian Bale and Amy Adams will also work together once more. Jeremy Renner completes a stellar line-up, as he is works with O.Russell for the first time.
O.Russell is not just in the director’s chair as he has also teamed up with Eric Warren Singer to pen the screenplay. O.Russell did such a wonderful job in adapting Matthew Quick’s novel Silver Linings Playbook, that it is fantastic to see his writing skills on show once again.
American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Cooper).
DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting.
Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down.
But just how many Oscar nominations can America Hustle notch up? I think it is a certainty for Best Picture. We could see any of the cast either pick up Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress nods. David O.Russell could also find himself in the Best Director race once again.
2014 looks set to be a year for fantastic ensemble casts and American Hustle is kicking that trend off in style - this cast list really is top drawer. I am exciting to see all these actors on screen together, but I am also looking forward to seeing Cooper and Lawrence starring side by side once again.
American Hustle is a movie that I have personally been looking forward to for some time and it promises to be a January gem, with everyone involved in top form.
