There are few rules in cinema that stand anymore. What is certain though is that the third in a series of films is 99.99% of the time worse than those before.
Only Indiana Jones, Jason Bourne, Clint Eastwood and a few Hobbits have broken this rule before. Now, you can add a string-pull cowboy to the list.
Toy Story 3 sees Woody, Buzz and the old gang (minus a few lesser known faces) having to deal with Andy going off to university. Faced with the fear of being trashed, they jump into a mysterious box labelled ‘day care.’
They end up at Sunnyside, a place that seems like a paradise for the toys and are greeted by a raft of new toys, headed up by the genial old bear ‘Lotso’ and a very fashion conscious Ken doll.
But everything’s not quite as it should be and Woody has to get them out of trouble once again.
This may be a child’s film, but as with every Pixar film, the fun doesn’t stop when you can join your handwriting.
Toy Story 3 is easily the funniest film of the year so far, with truly inspired jokes from the very first minute until the closing seconds during the credits.
Alongside side splitting laughs (Mr Potato Head not being a potato for a while is simply genius) this is a brilliantly paced film with great characters both old and new.
Cracking voice work throughout helps matters no end, adding just that little more to the new crew to give them some of the old magic.
Many people were worried when Pixar announced a third Toy Story movie, thinking it might be step too far.
Those thoughts should be put away though, as with this instalment Toy Story can now stand as possibly one of the greatest ever film trilogies.
Inception may have blown our minds, but Toy Story 3’s warm, funny adventure will be right up there come awards time next year. Make sure you don’t miss the magic.
Toy Story 3 is out now.
