Here we are at the end of our count down and it's Ridley Scott's Blade Runner that tops our poll, it's also a second appearance for actor Harrison Ford.Loosely based on Philip K.Dick's short story, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and was released in 1982.The story follows policeman Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) who is hunting four cloned humanoids, known as replicants.Replicants are illegal and Deckard, a blade runner, has been brought out of retirement to catch them as he is a specialist in exterminating them.Whilst on the surface being an action movie it also looks into themes of religion, morals and the human race's mastery of genetic engineering.Blade Runner is also filled with nods to the film noir genre with ideas of the femme fatal and the questionable moral outlook of the movie's hero running through it.
Questions were raised, when the film was released, if Deckard was actually a replicant himself however Ford has always claimed that director Scott told him, while they were shooting, that his character was human.
But in 2000, having never commented on this subject, Scott revealed that Deckard was a replicant and a sequence was put in the Director's Cut that was interpreted by many critics that Deckard had false memories.
But when the film was eventually released it did poorly at the box office, but it did have to compete with other sci-fi movies including Spielberg's E.T and The Thing.
Despite performing this poor box office performance and mixed reviews the film went on to be nominated for a succession of awards including an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
While it wasn't a success upon release Blade Runner has become a cult hit and included in many charts listing the best movies of all time.
It's dark style and futuristic designs and effects have served as a benchmark and an influence for many science fiction movies that have been made and released since.
