The original Star Wars trilogy makes it to the list, quite possibly not for reasons of science, but maybe more for nostalgia. The first release Star War, later changed to A New Hope, was released in 1977 becoming a global phenomenon propelling Mark Harnill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher to stardom as well as cult status. The success of Star Wars: A New Hope spawned two sequels The Empire Strike Back in 1980 and Return of the Jedi three years later in 1983.In A New Hope the galaxy is in civil war. Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan has been kidnapped by the Empire for stealing plans of the Death Star. She records a holographic message in droid R2-D2 for Obi Wan Kenobi. The droid along with humanoid partner C-3PO escape to planet Tatooine below. The droids are bought by Luke Skywalker who accidentally triggers the message. When R2-D2 escapes he leads Skywalker to Kenob, who tells Luke of his father's greatness and death.
They hire pilot Hans Sole and co-pilot Chewbacca to take them and the Death Star plane to the rebels.
The group face a showdown with Vader when they attempt to rescue the Princess and Kenobi is killed but the Death Star is destroyed.
In Empire Strikes Back the trio are being per sued by the Emipre and Luke is studying the Force under the guidance of Yoda.
But Luke is lured away by Vader after he captures the others and reveals that he is Luke's father, Luke also discovers that Leia is his twin sister.
In the final instalment the rebels attack the Death Star and Luke confronts Vader.
Vader is defeated but Luke is able to convince him that there is still some good left in him.
A New Hope remains one of the most financially successful movies of all time breaking house records when released.
Similarly The Empire Strike Back, often thought of as the best in the trilogy, surpassed the film industry's financial expectations recovering Lucas' $30 million budget.
And while Return of the Jedi did well at the box office it is largely considered to be the weakest of the original trilogy.
Since 1983 George Lucas has produced a second trilogy, a prequel to the original, set twenty years before which shows Anakin Skywalker growing up.
While all three movies: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith received mixed reviews from the critics they did well at the global box office.
Over the years the popularity of the original Star Wars, and it's characters, has kept on growing making it one of the most successful trilogies and franchises of all time.
