The Sessions is a movie that has been winning over audiences and critics on the festival circuit since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of 2012.
It was at Sundance where it won the Audience Award and since then the support for the film has been growing and growing.
The movie is based on the true story of Mark O'Brien, who was paralysed from the nick down after suffering from polio while Ben Lewin is in the director’s chair.
Lewin has not directed a feature film since Lucky Break back in 1994 having worked in TV ad documentary in the intervening years.
As well as being in the director’s chair Lewin has also penned the funny and moving screenplay.
Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O'Brien, "The Sessions" tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined at age 38 to lose his virginity.
With the help of his therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality.
John Hawkes takes on the central role of Mark O’Brien while Helen Hunt play sex therapist Cheryl - and these two performances have been causing quite a stir.
There has been plenty of Oscar talk since September and Hunt and Hawkes have always been in the mix for the Best Actress and Best Actor nominations.
Hunt and Hawkes are joined on the cast list by William H. Macy, Moon Bloodgood, Annika Marks and Adam Arkin.
While The Sessions is not a movie that is considered an Oscars frontrunner but it is the film that could well be the dark horse and sneak a whole host of nominations when they are announced in January.
The Sessions is released 18th January
