Christopher Eccleston has enjoyed a wide and varied career in the years that he has been acting moving between television movies from serious dramas to more relaxed roles.
This week he is back on the big screen in the last blockbuster of the summer G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra, yes in the role of the villain Destro.
The Salford born actor made his breakthrough back in 1991 when he starred in the 1991 film Let Him Have It. Directed by Peter Medak and is based on the true story of Derek Bentley who was hung for the murder of a police man under controversial circumstances.
From this role he moved into television with parts in Poirot and Morse before coming a regular in Cracker.
While he had continued with his movie work appearing in Death and the Compass and Anchoress it was 1994 and Danny Boyle's directorial debut Shallow Grave that once again brought him plenty of attention.
But he would stay away from the big screen for the next two years as he landed the part of Nicky Hutchinson in Our Friends in the North for the BBC, which also starred Daniel Craig.
This part saw his career rise and over the next couple of years he juggled television and movie commitments starring in Jude, in which David Tennant also appeared, and Elizabeth as well as Hillsborough and Clocking Off for the small screen.
2002 saw him reunite with Danny Boyle as he starred in horror movie 28 Day Later.
The Second Coming in 2003 saw him work with Russell T Davis for the very first time, the role also gave him his second British Academy Television Awards nomination losing out to Bill Nighy.
However it was his appointment as the ninth Doctor in Russell T Davis' revival of Doctor Who in 2005 that well and truly made him a household name.
The show was a huge hit and Eccleston was voted the Most Popular Actor at the National Television Awards in 2005. But after just one series in the role the actor announced that he would be leaving the role.
Since leaving the hit BBC show Eccleston has gone on to juggle TV and film as well as appearing in the theatre in productions such as Romeo and Juliet and Night Sky.
He starred in Perfect Parents for ITV before joining the cast of Heroes as Claude, who had the power of invisibility.
He also appeared in movies New Orleans, Mon Amour and shot in post Hurricane Katrina New Orleans and The Dark is Rising.
After his blockbuster role this summer Eccleston moves onto a smaller production as he stars alongside Hilary Swank and Ewan McGregor in Amelia, a biopic picture about Amelia Earhart.
G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is released 7th August.
