The Kids Are All Right

The Kids Are All Right

Passion, betrayal, love and humor are all part of this endearing story by Lisa Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, directed by Lisa Cholodenko (High Art & Laurel Canyon).

Amidst the modern day backdrop of the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks, the story begins with a glimpse into the convergent lifestyles of a lesbian couple, Nic and Jules (Annette Benning, Julianne Moore) along with their two teenage children, Joni (Mia Wasikowska) and Laser.

Nic is a successful gynecologist who loves her wine and Jules is an aspiring landscape designer, trying to get her new business off the ground. They love each other but it is clear that there is tension weighing them down.

When younger brother Laser asks Joni, who is 18, to find out whom their biological father is, she is very hesitant and worried that this revelation will hurt their moms’ feelings and damage their family structure.

Against her better judgment, Joni decides to contact the sperm bank and Paul (Mark Ruffalo), their bio-dad, gets the call from the bank asking if he would be willing to meet his daughter. Paul agrees and the story takes off from here.

The film then explores the impact this pivotal decision has on the entire family, weaving in and out of infidelity, friendship, success, failure, and ultimately, the familial bond that transcends all.
