Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas

With the likes of Avengers Assemble, The Dark Knight Rises and Expendables 2 2012 has definitely been a great year if you are a fan of the ensemble cast movie.

And it looks like that trend it going to continue into 2013 as there are a whole host of movies that bring together some of the biggest names in cinema.

So we have taken a look at some of the ensemble movies to keep an eye out for next year.

- Quartet: 4th January

The first of the ensemble movies to be hitting the big screen will be Quartet - which marks the directorial debut of double Oscar winner Dustin Hoffman.

It may have taken him over forty years to finally helm a movie but it is a wonderful film that brings together a super talented cast.

Maggie Smith leads that cast and she is joined by Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Sherdian Smith and Michael Gambon.

At a home for retired opera singers, the annual concert to celebrate Verdi's birthday is disrupted by the arrival of Jean, who is struggling with the idea of getting old and is the former wife of one of the residents.

- Gangster Squad: 11th January

Gangster Squad was one of the 2012 movies that I was really looking forward to but was pushed back into the schedule due to the Aurora shootings.

The movie is directed by Ruben Fleischer and is an adaptation of Paul Lieberman's novel Tales From The Gangster Squad.

The gangster movie is one of my favourites this movie has a cast that will make your eyes water as Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Anthony Mackie, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Pena are all set to star.

Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and - if he has his way - every wire bet placed west of Chicago.

But a secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

- Lincoln: 25th January

No new year would be complete without the biopic as Steven Spielberg brings us Lincoln - a movie that is already being considered an Oscar contender.

The Academy always love a real story and this could be a major winner on the awards circuit when it gets underway later this year.

Double Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis will take on the role of Abraham Lincoln and he is joined on the cast list by Joseph Gordon Levitt, Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, Jackie Earle Haley, David Strathairn, Hal Holbrook and Jared Harris.

As the Civil War continues to rage, America's president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.

- Movie 43: 1st February

But if there is a real ensemble project on the horizon then it is Movie 43 that not only has a very long cast list but it also sees a whole host of people in the director's chair.

The comedy will be split into sections with the likes of Brett Ratner, Elizabeth Banks, Peter Farrelly and Steven Brill being just some of the names who will be directing.

As for the cast list well it is humongous as Halle Berry, Kristen Bell, Kate Winslet, Gerard Butler, Hugh Jackman, Richard Gere, Emma Stone, Uma Thurman and Naomi Watts are just a few of the names that will appear.

With all these actors and directors Movie 43 looks set to be one of the most interesting films of early 2013 as the film intertwines a whole host of different tales and characters.

- Cloud Atlas: 22nd February

Another movie that is already gaining some Oscar interest is Cloud Atlas - which is an adaptation of the David Mitchell novel of the same name.

The movie marks the return of Tom Tykwer and Andy & Lana Wachowski to the director's chair and they have also penned the screenplay.

But it is the cast that is super exciting as Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Ben Whishaw and Susan Sarandon.

But what is even more interesting about this film is all the cast will be playing multiple characters - with Hanks and Berry playing six different people.

Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future.

Action, mystery and romance weave dramatically through the story as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution in the distant future.

- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire: 22nd November

One movie that everyone is looking forward to next year is The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - which will be the second film in the trilogy to hit the big screen.

This time around Francis Lawrence is in the director's chair and filming is currently underway in the States.

Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson are aback as Katniss, Gale and Peeta while Elizabeth Banks, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci and Donald Sutherland are some of the familiar faces returning.

But there will also be new actors involved as Sam Claflin will play Finnick Odair, Jenna Malone is Johanna Mason and Philip Seymour Hoffman has landed the role of Plutarch Heavensbee.

Catching Fire is the continuing adventure of Katniss Everdeen as she prepares to go back into the arena for the Quarter Quell.

Other movies that are bring great ensemble casts includes The Butler, Star Trek Into Darkness, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and The Great Gatsby.
