With roles in films like The Colour Purple and Leathel Weapon, Danny Glover has established himself as one of Hollywood’s great diverse actors.
He burst onto the big screen playing a corrupt cop in Witness in 1985 and there has since been no looking back.
In his latest film, Age of the Dragons, which releases 4th March, he stars alongside footballer turned Hollywood actor Vinnie Jones in a retelling of the Herman Melville classic Moby Dick.
To celebrate its release we take a look at how Danny Glover’s career has developed over the years.
Age of the Dragons - 2011
It’s Moby Dick like you have never seen it before. Glover teams up with Vinnie Jones in this all-action retelling of the classic story. Captain Ahab (Glover) and his crew hunt the most feared creatures to have ever existed: Dragons!
Harpooner Ishmael (Corey Sevier) joins the crew to seek revenge on the White Dragon that killed his family and left him scarred; cue Ahab’s adopted daughter Rachel (Sofia Pernas) as a potential love interest.
Be Kind Rewind - 2008
Be Kind Rewind tells the story of Jerry (Jack Black) a junkyard worker who unintentionally destroys every tape in the video store where his friend works with his magnetised brain.
In a desperate bid to keep the shops one loyal customer, an elderly lady with dementia, Jerry attempts to re-create classic films including Ghostbusters and Driving Miss Daisy.
Danny Glover stars as Mr Fletcher the store’s owner in this laugh out loud comedy from the director of The Green Hornet.
Dreamgirls - 2006
Starring alongside Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson in this Academy Award winning musical, Glover plays Marty Madison manager to James ‘Thunder’ Early.
The film was a huge success earning American Idol contestant and newcomer Jennifer Hudson an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
The Royal Tenenbaums - 2001
A quirky comedy co-written by Owen Wilson, The Royal Tenenbaums stars a host of top Hollywood actors including Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Royal Tenebaum left his wife and children years ago. Twenty two years later, Royal is kicked out of the hotel where he has been staying since the split and returns home determined to reconnect with his children who have all grown into prodigies, each with a unique genius of some kind. Glover stars as Henry Sherman an accountant and love interest to Royals wife Ethel (Huston).
Beloved - 1998
Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name by Toni Morrison, Glover stars alongside Oprah Winfrey in this mystery drama from the director of Philadelphia.
After Paul D moves in to his old slave friend Sethe’s home that she shares with her daughter Denver a mysterious girl known only as ‘Beloved’ brings with her strange things.
Predator 2 - 1990
LAPD Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Glover) and his detective partner Jerry Lambert (Bill Paxton) must save the world against an evil predator.
Sequel to the popular sci-fi original which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Predator 2 put Glover in the spotlight, establishing him as a great Blockbuster actor.
To Sleep with Anger - 1990
Glover won a Best Actor Independent Spirit Award for his role in this drama directed by Charles Burnett. Harry Mention (Glover) is a charming Southern drifter who comes to visit an old friend (Paul Butler) and his family in Los Angeles.
Underneath Harry’s polite manner is a fondness for stirring up trouble and during his stay he begins to have a strange effect on Gideon and his wife and two sons.
Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2 - 1987 and 1989
Considered by many to be his most famous role, it was Glover’s performance as Detective Roger Murtaugh in the Lethal Weapon franchise that made people sit up and take notice.
Starring alongside Mel Gibson in the action packed crime drama; he played a veteran cop who has his nose put of joint when he is partnered with suicidal cop Riggs (Gibson). Together they must put their differences aside and uncover a huge drug smuggling operation.
The Colour Purple - 1985
This Steven Spielberg classic was nominated for a whopping 11 Academy Awards back in 1985. Starring alongside Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey it follows the life of Celie, a young black girl growing up in the early 1990’s.
Abused and pregnant by her father, Celie is forced to marry local widower Albert Johnson (Glover) who beats her and treats her like a slave.
The film follows Celie at different times throughout her life as she forms a friendship with Sofia (Winfrey) and eventually finds the courage to stand up for herself.
Witness - 1985
When a young Amish boy witnesses a murder while travelling with his mother in Philadelphia, policeman John Book (Harrison Ford) is enlisted to protect them.
Forced into hiding when the killers come after them they must hide out in the Amish country where Book must adjust to the Amish way of life.
Glover puts in a great performance as corrupt cop James McFee in this classic thriller which was nominated for eight Academy Awards
