Ok so Titanic is the biggest grossing movie of all time and James Bond is the biggest grossing film franchise, taking nearly $5 billion from twenty two movies.
Today FemaleFirst takes a look at the biggest one day openings in America and Canada.
1. The Dark Knight $67,165,092
The Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight was the movie of 2008 which saw a career defining turn from Heath Ledger resulting in a Bafta, Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and Oscar being award yo him posthumously.
The film broke the $1 billion barrier to join the likes of Titanic, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
2. Spider-Man 3 $59,841,919
Released in 2007 Spider Man 3 was the last time that we saw this superhero, played by Tobey Maguire on the big screen.
Despite this impressive first day opening Spider-Man 3 only finished up at number thirteen biggest grossing movies of all time.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $55,830,600
After the success of Pirates of the Caribbean, which relaunched Johnny Depp's career as well as making Captain Jack Sparrow one of the biggest cinema icons of the last decade, Dead Man's Chest was one of the most anticipated movies of 2006.
And Pirates' fans flocked to the cinema in droves as it went on to become the third biggest movie of all time as it broke through the $1 billion barrier.
4. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith $50,013,859
Revenge of the Sith as the third and final movie in the Star Wars franchise, despite the fact that Star Wars went on to spawn and animation series.
However despite the impressive opening day box office sales it is The Phantom Menace that is the most successful Star Wars movie. However Revenge of the Sith did go on to gross over $848 million.
5. X-Men: The Last Stand $45,102,265
The Last Stand was the final movie in the X-Men franchise, a franchise that enjoyed major success at the box office.
However it was a movie that was plagued with issues after Bryan Singer dropped out to direct Superman Returns and was replaced by Brett Ratner.
6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $44,232,338
The Order of the Phoenix was the fifth movie in the Harry Potter film franchise released back in 2007.
With Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint all reprising their roles as Hogwarts students the movie was a massive hit and was the second biggest grossing film in the Potter series behind The Philosopher's Stone.
7. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $42,910,392
2007 rounded off the Pirates trilogy of movie when At World's End was released, it has since been made know that a fourth movie is in fact in the pipeline with Depp reprising his role of Jack.
The movie brought to a close the story with Jack, Elizabeth and Will and went on to be the sixth biggest grossing movie of all time, just falling short of the $1 billion barrier.
8. Spider-Man 2 $40,442,604
After the $821 million success of Spiderman in 2002 it was inevitable that a sequel wouldn't be far behind. And it was 2004 when Spidey 2 hit the screens.
Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst both reprised their roles and the film was a massive hit at the box office as it went on to gross over $783 million. A fourth picture is rumoured to be in the pipeline.
9. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire $40,118,363
2005 brought the fourth Harry Potter adaptation to the big screen and it was met well both by critics and audiences.
Having grossed over $102 million in it's first five days it was the highest first weekend total for a Harry Potter film and it went on to gross over $895 million at the global box office.
10. Spider-Man $39,406,872
2002 kicked off the boom in comic book adaptation as Spider-Man his the big screen with Tobey Maguire in the lead role as Peter Parker.
The adaptation of the Marvel Comic character was a massive box office success as it grossed over $821 million.
