The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

Last night the Empire Awards 2009 rounded of this year's awards season and there was major success for The Dark Knight as well as more recognition for Danny Boyle.

The film which broke box office records and thrilled crowds across the globe, The Dark Knight, scooped the top prizes with awards for  Christopher Nolan for Best Film and Best Director and for Christian Bale, the award for Best Actor.

The awards also honoured the life works of a talent sorely missed - the late  Heath Ledger, who received a Special Commemoration. The actor died of an accidental overdose in 2008 and he won a Bafta, Golden Globe and Oscar for his performance as the Joker.

After his success with Slumdog Millionaire the Outstanding Contribution to British Film award could only go to one man as Danny Boyle will have to find more space on his bulging mantlepiece for one more gong.

James Bond and Quantum of Solace continue to prove the ultimate in crowd pleasing thrills and spills with the film winning the Best Thriller award, which was collected by the beautiful and talented Olga Kurylenko.

And Guy Ritchie’s fantastically fast and furious Brit flick  RocknRolla grabbed Best British Film with the cast of Mark Strong, and Gerard Butler joining Guy Ritchie on the stage.

Gemma Arterton also picked up a Best Newcomer award for her role in both Quantum of Solace and RocknRolla. And 2009/10 looks set to be a busy year for the new actress with The Boat That Rocked and Price of Persia: Sands of Time in the pipeline.

Best horror movie went to the British flick Eden Lake while James McAvoy picked up the Best Sci-Fi/Superhero movies on behalf of the cast of Wanted. There was also success for Garth Jennings' Son of Rambow which picked up Best Comedy.

The awards, which are in their fourteenth year and are voted for by Empire Magazine readers.
