Bruce Wayne may be busy battling to save Gotham City but there has been no shortage of women in his life.
And the Dark Knight Rises is no different as Wayne comes face to face with Anne Hathaway's Catwoman as well as romancing Miranda Tate, played by Marion Cotillard.
So we take a look at some of the actresses who have taken on good and bad roles in the franchise over the years.
- Kim Basinger - Vicki Vale
Tim Burton brought Batman to the big screen back in 1989 and it was Kim Basinger who played the lead female role.
Vicki Vale is a photo-journalist and has come to Gotham to do a piece on Batman before meeting and becoming involved with Bruce Wayne, played my Michael Keaton.
She discovers his identity and while the pair are together at the end of the movie Wayne reveals in Batman Returns that she struggled to handle his dual life and ended their relationship.
Basinger depicts Vale as a strong and independent woman who is driven by her work and her desire for a story.
- Michelle Pfeiffer - Catwoman
The role of Selina Kyle aka Catwoman remains one of Michelle Pfeiffer most iconic characters and memorable roles.
Selina is a shy and quiet receptionist for Max Shreck but when he discovers her boss' plans he pushes her from the top of the company building.
She survives the fall but becomes Catwoman. A deadly foe for Batman and yet romantically linked to Wayne.
It is a superb performance from Pfeiffer and she has remained one of the greatest characters in this franchise.
- Nicole Kidman - Dr. Chase Meridian
Joel Schumacher took over the direction of the batman franchise in 1995 and Val Kilmer took over the role of Bruce Wayne.
Nicole Kidman takes on the role of Dr Chase Meridian in the movie another love interest of Wayne.
She is a psychologist working with the Gotham City police and is fascinated by the dual personality of Batman.
- Uma Thurman - Poison Ivy
2007 saw Batman & Robin hit the big screen and while Joel Schumacher was back in the director's chair it was George Clooney who took on the central role.
Uma Thurman took on the role of Dr Pamela Isley in the movie who is a botanist working at Wayne Enterprises.
She is pushed into plant toxins and chemicals by Dr Woodrue when Pamela refuses to go along with his plan of creating and army of Bane's.
She transforms into Poison Ivy who is part human and part plant and now an eco-terrorist.
- Katie Holmes - Rachel Dawes
The batman franchise was given a reboot in 2005 as Christopher Nolan brought his take on the story to the big screen in Batman Begins back in 2005.
Katie Holmes played the female lead of Rachel Dawes in the movie a assistant district attorney and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne.
Wayne makes it clear that he want to be more than just friends with Rachel but she reveals that she cannot be with him until his time as Batman has come to an end.
Rachel Dawes is a strong woman who is not afraid of those who try and bring Gotham to it's knees and is more than willing to prosecute them - even if it does make her a target.
- Maggie Gyllenhaal - Rachel Dawes
The role of Rachel was re-cast in The Dark Knight Rises and it was Maggie Gyllenhaal who took over the role.
She is now dating Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart, despite still having some feeling for Bruce.
When Dent asks her to marry him she realises that Bruce will always need Batman even if the city of Gotham doesn't.
But Harvey and Rachel are kidnapped by the Joker; Rachel dies in an explosion while Dent become Two-Face.
