First-time directors Matthew Aeberhard and Leander Ward spent a year camped out on the shores of Lake Natron in northern Tanzania to capture the life cycle of the endangered lesser flamingos, one of the planet's most striking birds.
The result is a rich, captivating documentary, narrated by husky-voiced Mariella Frostrup, as we follow more than a million of these crimson creatures from birth to death tackling the harsh conditions and persistent predators on Lake Natron's isolated shores.
Particularly impressive are the egg-hatching sequence captured in remarkable detail and the deeply moving section in which a flock of marabou storks feeds on a handful of vulnerable flamingo chicks.
Mating rituals, first steps, flamingos taking flight and inspiring, aerial shots of the lake's pink, salty waters punctuate the action in Disney's first foray into the wildlife genre for 60 years.
The Crimson Wing is released 25th September.
