Gary Oldman in Red Riding Hood


Gary Oldman is one of the greates actor that this country has ever produced moving effortlessly from the independent movies to the big budget blockbuster.

Over the years he has become famous for his dark and somewhat morally ambiguous characters and this week he is back on the big screen in Red Riding Hood.

Directed by Catherine Hardwicke the movie sees Oldman team up with Amanda Seyfried for a new take on an old tale.

To celebrate the release of the movie we take a look back over Oldman's career and some of his most famous roles.

Sid & Nancy

Oldman may have kicked off his career in 1982 but it was the movie Sid & Nancy four years later that was to be project that paved the way.

Sid and Nancy is the sad, sordid story of Sid Vicious, a member of the seminal British punk group The Sex Pistols, and his doomed relationship with his American girlfriend, Nancy Spungen.

His central performance as Sid Vicious, alongside Chloe Webb as Nancy, grabbed everyone's attention and paved the way for him to work in Hollywood.

Prick Up Your Ears

Prick Up Your Ears was another biopic type picture that saw Oldman take on the role of playwright Joe Orton.

Prick Up Your Ears is based on the book by theater critic John and tells the story of the spectacular life and violent death of British playwright Joe Orton.

Directed by Stephen Frears the movie brought together an impressive cast that included Alfred Molina and Vanessa Redgrave.

The mpvie has been met well by the critics and has gone on to become a bit of a cult classic.

Dracula

Dracula is one of the roles that Oldman will always be remembered as he lead the cast in the Francis Ford Coppola directed movie.

Based on the Victorian horror novel written by Bram Stoker in 1897, about the vampire Dracula, who is on a quest to be eternally reunited with the one woman he ever loved.

Dracula travels from Transylvania to London to find the young woman who is the double image of the love he lost centuries earlier.

The movie opened at #1 at the American box office and it was met well by the critics.

The Contender

In 2000 he moved into the political thriller once again, having starred in JFK, with the Rod Lurie directed The Contender.

When the current Vice President dies, the President appoints Senator Laine Hanson as the first woman to hold the office.

The selection process is met with opposition, particularly from a powerful adversary who will stop at nothing to discredit her.

As shocking secrets are revealed, a political firestorm is set off that threatens her personal life as well as her political career. Laine Hanson has what it takes to be Vice President, but does she have the stomach to get the job done?

The Contender brought Oldman a Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role nomination at the Screen Actors Guild - losing out to Albert Finney for Erin Brockovich.

Harry Potter

The big budget blockbuster beckoned in 2004 when he took on the role of Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

He went on to reprise the role in Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix and will return fo the final time later this year with Deathly Hallos: Part 2.

The Harry Potter movies has gone on to become the biggest grossing franchise of all time and Oldman is just one in a long list of big names that has appeared in the series of movies.

The Dark Knight

Not content with finding success in just one franchise he took on the role of Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan's Batman series.

The Dark Knight was released back in the summer of 2008 and is widely regarded as the best superhero movie of all time.

Batman, Gordon and Harvey Dent are forced to deal with the chaos unleashed by an anarchist mastermind known only as the Joker, as he drives each of them to their limits.

The movie went on to break $1 billion at the global box office and The Dark Knight Rises is in the pipeline.

Other Oldman movies that are well worth checking out include JFK, True Romance, Leon and The Fifth Element.

The actor has lent his voice to Kung Fu Panda 2 and completed work Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, both of which are out later this year.

Guns, Girls and Gambling and Criminal Empire for Dummy's are both in post production and he has just finished Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
