We are now getting to the business end of our chart as we enter out top three of the best and worst movies of 2007.At number three we look at the summer hit Hairspray and the latest in the string of horror movies Hostel II.

No 3 The Best: Hairspray
With plenty of lift and lots of body Hairspray is quite simply terrific as the surprise package of the summer holding it's own against the might of the summer blockbuster.Based on the Broadway show of the 1988 non musical version starring Ricki Lake Hairspray is a story of social outsiders who unite to fight oppression.Set in 1960’s Baltimore overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad (Nikki Blonsky) has one dream, to dance on the Corny Collins Show. But Tracy’s mother Edna (John Travolta) doesn’t share her daughter’s dream.

Edna hasn’t left the house since 1951, because she is embarrassed about her size, and she fears that Tracy will be ridiculed and disappointed due to her weight.

Velma Von Tussle (Michelle Pfeiffer) does everything to spoil Tracy’s chances. She controls the Corny Collins Show, 1960’s version of the Mickey Mouse Club, with an iron fist. She uses the show to promote her daughter Amber and is trying to ban Negro Day, where once a month African American kids dance on the show.

Soon Tracy is fighting Amber for the (Miss Hairspray title), calling for integration, and trying to win the heart of Link (Zac Efron), the most popular boy in school.

There are some great breakthrough performances from newcomer Nikki Blonsky and High School Musical teen sensation Zac Efron.

But it's the older members of the cast that really do shine. John Travolta, who took fourteen months to accept the role, just puts in a show stopping performance as Edna. Stealing every scene that he appears in surely an Oscar nod should come his way.

Michelle Pfeiffer appears in her first film for five years as the nasty Velma Von Tussle with a surprisingly assured vocal performance and looking great. And Christopher Walken, Allison Janney and Queen Latifah all producing hilarious supporting roles.

In all this is an original, funny movie full of catchy tunes that will have you singing along as well aching with laughter.

But the topic and message of fighting racial segregation may have been somewhat diluted despite this issue being resolved come the closing credits.

This is an all singing all dancing musical extravaganza that really puts the musical bag on the map.

No 3 The Worst: Hostel II

Yes the inevitable sequel to the 2005 original made it to the big screen earlier this year. and along with the string of Saw movies gained the title gore porn.

College students Beth (Lauren German), Whitney (Bijou Phillips) and Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) are taking in the sights of Europe on an art trip.

In Rome beautiful life model Axelle (Vera Jordanova) persuades the trio to delay their trip to Prague and visit the health spas in Slovakia.

On arrival the girls discover that they have been auctioned off to the highest bidder as victims who will be tortured and killed.

There really are very few positive points, if any, that can be mentioned in defence of this truly awful, clearly money making, picture.

There's the inevitable guts and gore as Roth aims to shock and repulse the audience. But after the string of horror movies and horror remakes today's audience are becoming immune and slightly bored with this shock tactic that is used so often by horror directors.

This picture is an uninspiring ninety four minutes that lacks any sort of originality going everywhere the first movie went. And by producing a carbon copy of the original Roth is failing to live up to his title of Future of Horror Movies and Quentin Tarantino's protege.
