Megan Paige (Eliza Dushku) is a driven police investigator whose commitment to the job borders on obsession. The only other aspect of her life that receives any attention is her significent other Kenneth Shine (Cary Elwes), who just happens to be a lieutenant with the RPD.

They are currently working on their worst cases yet, the murder and rape of a ten year old girl named Carla Castillo and when megan puts it together that she was murdered in Churchville, Megan becomes convinced that they are dealing iwth a serial killer.

She becomes so caught up in her work that she begins to have hallucinations... and a bloody Carla begins to haunt her regularly.

When Megan cannot crack the case her boss Captain Gullikson (Tom Noonan) pulls her off it, it pushes her over the edge and Megan suffers a nervous breakdown. She's diagnosed with an adult onset of paranoid schizophrenia that finds her in a psychiatric hospital instead of her precinct and to top it off, she breaks off her engagement with Kenneth.

Two years later Megan regains work for the department, but now in the shadow of her former capacity (she's a records clerk) and also in the shadow of her former fiancee, Kenneth has been promoted to the hand of the department.

At least she's got a support group for mental illness survivors and wheel-chair bound frined Richard Ledge (Timothy Hutton)

When another girl, Wendy Walsh, is abductedm raped and murdered in Webster Megan is convinced thatthe killer has resurfaced and her old fire is reheated. Against her better judgement Kenneth allows Megan to ride along with the investigator Steven Harper after she badgers him, but only in an advisory capacity.

However soon after she is in the thick of things her old symptoms start coming back, namely in form of hallucinations of both dead girls now. And it's worse she's beginning to manifest embarrassing physical traits as well in the form of involuntary movements and ticks, which causes her to stop taking her meds which makes the hallucinations worse.

Ledge tells her that she's flirting with disaster but knows better than to try and talk her out of anything. Megan knows that the case is in danger of going cold with few leads, no suspects and a serial killer on the loose.

Can she catch him in time? Or will the alphabet killer go free?
