SUNSHINE once again pairs director Danny Boyle with writer Alex Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald, who previously teamed up for the smash-hit 28 Days Later. The cast is led by Rose Byrne (Troy), Cliff Curtis (Whale Rider), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four), Troy Garity (After the Sunset), Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later), Hiroyuki Sanada (The Last Samurai), Benedict Wong (Dirty Pretty Things) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). It is the year 2057, the Sun is dying and mankind faces extinction. Earth’s last hope lies with the Icarus II, a spacecraft with a crew of eight men and women led by Captain Kaneda. Their mission: to deliver a nuclear device designed to reignite our fading sun. Deep into their voyage, out of radio contact with Earth, the crew hear a distress beacon from the Icarus I, which disappeared on the same mission seven years earlier. A terrible accident throws their mission into jeopardy and soon the crew find themselves fighting not only for their lives and their sanity, but for the future of us all.

The production team is led by director of photography Alwin Kuchler (Morvern Callar, Code 46), production designer Mark Tildesley (28 Days Later, Millions), editor Chris Gill (28 Days Later, Millions), Academy Award-winning make-up and hair designer Christine Blundell (Topsy Turvy, The Constant Gardener), and costume designer Suttirat Larlarb (A Foreign Affair). The Moving Picture Company, headed up by supervisor Tom Wood, created the spectacular visual effects. The soundtrack is by John Murphy and Karl Hyde & Rick Smith of Underworld, who continue a collaboration with Boyle which began with the hugely influential soundtrack for Trainspotting.

Danny Boyle's first feature, Shallow Grave, earned him the BAFTA Alexander Korda Award for Outstanding British Film as well as a host of other accolades. Boyle’s second feature, Trainspotting, is one of the highest grossing British films of all time and an iconic cinematic milestone in 90s British film culture. The critically acclaimed film won four Empire Awards including Best Director and Best Film and was nominated for a BAFTA Alexander Korda Award.

In 2002 Boyle made 28 Days Later which grossed more than $85 million worldwide. The film earned Boyle a Saturn Award for Best Horror Film from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films and was nominated for three British Independent Film Awards including Best Director, Best Film and Best Achievement in Production.

Boyle’s other feature films include The Beach; A Life Less Ordinary, and Alien Love Triangle. Boyle’s work in television includes Alan Clark’s controversial Elephant; Strumpet; Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise, and the series Mr Wroe’s Virgins, for which he received a BAFTA nomination. His latest feature was Millions.

SUNSHINE is the seventh collaboration between Danny Boyle and Andrew Macdonald. Macdonald heads UK based production company DNA Films, which in 2002 formally announced a joint venture with the US film distributor Fox Searchlight Pictures. The company finances and produces British films and provides access to an international distribution network. Recent productions include 28 Days Later, The Last King of Scotland, The History Boys and Notes on a Scandal.

SUNSHINE is the third time Boyle and Macdonald have worked with writer Alex Garland. After adapting his hit novel The Beach in 2000, they teamed up with him in 2002 for the box office hit 28 Days Later.
