Love it or hate it the big budget blockbusters have ruled supreme at the box office this summer with the likes of Transformers and Wolverine all getting releases.

Blockbuster summer has become an annual event over recent years and all the big budget movies battle it out over recent weeks to reign at the box office.

But G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra brought a close to proceedings two weeks ago as the last of the big cash movies to hit cinemas this summer. So FemaleFirst takes a look back over the last few weeks to uncover which has been the most successful movie.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine was first out of the block at the beginning of May, it didn't do Iron Man any harm last year, and the movie, which saw Hugh Jackman reprise the role of Logan, faired pretty well.

Wolverine was the first spin off from the X-Men movies and with a $363 million gross it secured a second movie for itself whilst giving the Deadpool and Magneto spin off's the green light.

But just a week later the new look Star Trek movie hit the big screen with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto in the roles of Kirk and Spock.

The movie was met well by the critics and it grossed a respectable $382 million at the global box office.

Despite being neatly tied up at the end of the first movie Night at the Museum was back this summer as Ben Stiller reprised the role of Larry Daly for Battle of the Smithsonian.

and once again the film was a big hit as it topped the box office in the States seeing off competition from terminator Salvation.

Yes Terminator was back as Christian Bale took over the role of John Connor and Arnold  Schwarzenegger appearing in a cameo role.

Despite the names and the money behind the movie terminator Salvation was a major miss with the critics but it did go on to gross 369 million at the box office. There are rumours that another sequel is in the pipeline.

The end of June brought the first big movie as Michael Bay's Transformers returned, two years after the first, with Revenge of the Fallen.

Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox were back as Sam and Mikaela and were once again fighting to save the planet from the Decepticons.

Sadly it was another miss withe the critics but film fans flocked to see it and so far it has grossed $823 million, making it one of the biggest movies of the year.

However the biggest grossing movie of the summer goes to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, the penultimate story in the Harry Potter saga, has so far taken $826 million so far.

And G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra is the last of the blockbuster movies this summer and in the fortnight it has been on general release it has already grossed $170 million.

But away from the CGI laden movies there have been one or two movies that have really held their own well against the blockbusters.

The biggest success comes in the form of The Hangover, which really has been the surprise package of the summer.

Grossing $388 million the film was a critical and commercial hit topping the American box office and seeing of competition from Pixar's new movie Up. The Proposal was another comedy that has done well this summer becoming one of Sandra Bullock's most successful movies.
