Steven Spielberg

Steven Spielberg returns to the director's chair this week for the first time since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Yes The Adventures of Tintin: The Curse of the Unicorn is his first movie in three years... so what has he been up to in that time?

On the whole Spielberg has been working in TV, as a producer, and boy has he been behind some great shows recently.

The Oscar winning filmmaker has had a hand in the likes of The Pacific, which was one of the best TV shows to grace the big screen last year, and Falling Skies, one of the best TV shows of this year.

And after Falling Skies he didn't sit around with his feet up as his TV work continued with Terra Nova.

While he has not been directing movie projects for the last couple of years he has been producing a hell of a lot with the likes of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Cowboys & Aliens, Real Steel and Super 8 all under his belt this year.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Curse of the Unicorn marks his return as he teams up with fellow Oscar winner Peter Jackson to bring Herge's creations to life.

And it seems that Spielberg projects are like buses - you don't see one for a while and then a couple come along at once.

Despite not hitting cinema screens year War Horse is the early favourite to scoop Best Picture and next year's Oscars.

Now I have to admit that the trailer almost had me blubbing like a baby - it looks like it's going to be a super emotional ride when it hits the big screen in the new year.

War Horse is an adaptation of the novel by Michael Morpurgo and the stage play - the script having been penned by Richard Curtis and Lee Hall.

Follows a young man named Albert and his horse, Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War One.

Despite being too young to enlist, Albert heads to France to save his friend.

Over the years Spielberg has had a bit of a thing for war projects and this one looks set to be the most emotional yet.

And 2012 is set to be a year where Spielberg mixes directing with producing work.

He is currently filming biopic picture Lincoln, watch out for that at the Oscars of 2013, while Robopocalypse is in the pipeline.

Spielberg is also set to produce a whole host of titles, some also for TV, including Men in Black III, Smash, When Worlds Collide and The Talisman.
