Getting drunk and making a fool of yourself is far different from watching other drunk people make fools of themselves. This is true especially in films: when an actor is behaving outrageously, you can’t help but laugh.
To mark the Friday release of Smashed, a film about a young couple and their penchant for drinking, we have compiled our favourite scenes of on-screen drunkenness.
- Old School
Old School is a story of three friends, disillusioned by the reality of their lives, who decide to form their own fraternity to relive their college days. The best scene is where Frank (Will Ferrell) gets absolutely wasted at their frat party and goes streaking.
He is so drunkenly disillusioned that he thinks the entire party has followed suit, only to be found running down a major road, stark naked, by his wife and her friends.
- Superbad
Two weeks before High School graduation three friends are finally invited to a real party. They are asked to supply the alcohol for the whole shebang.
Superbad follows the adventure these boys have while trying to illegally procure alcohol.
The scene in a liquor store while one of the boys uses a fake ID to buy booze is one of the best..
- The Hangover
Things go terribly wrong when four friends set out to Las Vegas for a Stag party. After a wild night out, the guys awake to a six-month old child, a Tiger in the bathroom, and the groom seemingly missing.
The Hangover is a hilarious movie that highlights the headache that comes the morning after a big night of drinking.
- Animal House
Taking place on a college campus in the 1960’s, Animal House is the ultimate college film. Delta Tau Chi Fraternity is the party house on campus, and hated by the dean of students.
The dean enlists the help of another Fraternity of do-gooders to help get them kicked out of college.
The entire film has scene after scene of drinking, but here is perhaps the most outrageous one: John Blutarski (John Belushi) finishing a litre of Jack Daniels in 10 Seconds.
- The Big Lebowski
Acting in standard ‘The Dude’(Jeff Bridges) behaviour, this scene shows ‘The Dude’ driving his car whilst smoking a joint and drinking a beer.
When he thinks he is being followed, ‘The Dude’ tries to throw the joint out the closed window, which it then falls in his lap, burning him. He pours the beer on himself to put it out and crashes into a parked car.
- Sixteen Candles
Sixteen Candles follows the life of Samantha (Molly Ringwald), a fifteen- soon to be sixteen- year old girl whose high school life is less than ideal.
The school’s nerd has a crush on her, her family has forgotten her birthday, she is embarrassed terribly by grandparents and a foreign exchange student by the name of Long Duc Dong.
One of the best scenes is wher Long Duc Dong, after a night of drinking, is found in the front lawn by the grandparents.
- Pirates of the Caribbean
After Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) and Elizabeth Swan (Kiera Knightley) are thrown off the Black Pearl and marooned on a desolate island in the Caribbean, Elizabeth asks Sparrow how they plan to escape.
Captain Jack proceeds to show her a hidden stash of rum from the rum running days, and they proceed to get massively drunk on the beach. Sounds like fun to me!
- I Love You, Man
A hilarious film about a newly engaged Peter (Paul Rudd) realizing he doesn’t have any male friends to be a part of his wedding, and his hunt to make some guy friends.
There are a few drinking scenes in the film, but the best is the scene where Peter and Sydney (Jason Segal) go on their first man date.
- Smashed
Smashed is a great new film about a newly married young couple and the degree to which their lives revolve around alcohol.
When Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) decides to stop drinking, the film shows the struggles she and her husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) endure.
Be sure to see Smashed when it hits UK theatres 14 December 2012.
