Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds

The Screen Actors Guild Award nominations were announced last night and Inglourious Basterds finds itself competing for the Outstanding Performance By A Cast In A Motion Picture prize.

An Education, The Hurt Locker, Nine and Precious were the other nominees in the category but there was the obvious absence of Up In The Air as well as Invictus, which is struggling to get nominations so far.

The Hurt Locker continued its Oscar charge, proving to be a real force to be reckoned with this awards season as more nominations came its way.

The Iraq based drama which follows the bomb disposal unit has been gaining support and recognition from the critics who hailed it when it was released.

There was also good news for Jeremy Renner who was nominated in the Male Actor in a Leading Role category for his central and breakthrough performance.

However it’s a tough category with George Clooney, Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth and Morgan Freeman also all bagging nods.

Colin Firth leads the British charge in that category but there is also a strong British presence in the Female Actor in a Leading Role category.

Once again Carey Mulligan found herself in award contention, and is possibly the slight favourite at this point to win the Oscar for her role in An Education.

Hot off the heels of her Golden Globe nomination Helen Mirren was also given a nod for her role in The Station.

But once again it’s a very competitive category with Sandra Bullock, who is now also a strong contender for an Oscar nod for The Blind Side, Gabourey Sidibe for Precious and Meryl Streep for Julie and Julia.

Despite the film missing out Matt Damon was nominated for his supporting role in Invictus. The nominees mirror those chosen at the Golden Globes as Woody Harrelson, Christopher Plummer, Stanley Tucci and Christoph Waltz were also nominated.

There was double supporting actress success for Up In The Air as both Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga were nominated for their roles.

Mo’Nique bagged another nod for her role as an abusive mother in Precious and Penelope Cruz appears to be the standout female performance in musical Nine.

However there was the shock inclusion of Diane Kruger in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Inglourious Basterds.
