Everyone loves a good horror movie clinging next to the person beside us or hiding behind the sofa is all part and parcel of the horror movie experience.

This week sees the release of F, the new movie from filmmaker Johannes Roberts. Robert Anderson (David Schofield) is a burned-out, alcoholic, world-weary English teacher who works in a huge sprawling Comprehensive school.

After lessons have finished for the day, this place of learning becomes a vast, deserted labyrinth of corridors and empty rooms, gyms, studios and halls.

But all is not right with the school tonight - there are strange shadows and noises, signs of unusual and ominous activity. And then the school falls under relentless attack from a gang of mysterious and bloodthirsty hoodies, intent on only one thing - to spread terror!

To celebrate the release of the film we take a look at some of the scariest horror movies that have graced the big screen:

Psycho
1960
Starring: Janet Leigh, Anthony Perkins, Vera Miles, John Gavin

Phoenix office worker Marion Crane is unhappy in her job and frustrated in her romance with hardware store manager Sam Loomis. One afternoon, Marion is given $40,000 by her employer to bank. Seeing the opportunity to take the money and start a new life, Marion leaves town.

Tired after the long drive, she decides to stop for the night at the Bates Motel, which is managed by a man called Norman Bates who appears to be dominated by his mother. 

From this point, the complex thriller, Psycho, reveals disturbing themes of corruptibility, confused identities, voyeurism, human vulnerabilities and victimization, the deadly effects of money, Oedipal murder, and dark past histories.

The Exorcist
1973
Starring: Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, Max von Sydow, Kitty Winn, Lee J. Cobb, Jason Miller and Mercedes McCambridge

The Exorcist is a 1973 American horror film, adapted from the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The film is based on the exorcism case of Robbie Mannheim, a teenager who is demonically possessed by a mysterious entity. The film sees the young girl’s mother desperately seeking the help of two priests in order to save her daughter through the form of an exorcism.

Halloween
1978
Starring: Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, Nancy Loomis, Charles Cyphers

In Haddonfield, IL, on Halloween night 1963, six-year-old Michael Myers inexplicably slaughters his teenage sister. His psychiatrist can’t  penetrate Michael’s psyche after years of institutionalization, but he knows that when Myers escapes before Halloween in 1978, there will be hell to pay in Haddonfield.

While Loomis alerts police of his escape, Myers spots teenager Laurie Strode and follows her, constantly appearing and vanishing as she and her friends, Lynda and Annie, make their Halloween plans.

By nightfall, Laurie is doing her own and Annie’s babysitting jobs, while Annie and Lynda frolic in the parent-free house across the street. But when Annie and Lynda do not answer the phone, suspicious Laurie heads across the street to the darkened house to see what is going on...

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
1974

House Of Wax
2005

House of Wax tells the story of a group of friends who fall prey to a sinister plot while passing through a small town on their way to a college football game.

They end up in a town called Amrbose, where they are drawn to the main attraction, Trudy’s House of Wax, which is filled with life-like wax sculptures.

They soon discover there is a shocking reason that the sculptures look so real, and as the friends uncover the towns dark secrets, and are stalked by a demented killer, they find themselves in a battle for survival.

The Shining
1980
Starring: Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd, Scatman Crothers

Jack Torrance becomes the caretaker of the Overlook Hotel in the mountains of Colorado, and takes  his wife and son to the hotel to keep him company.

During their stay, strange things occur when Jack’s son sees gruesome images powered by a force called ‘the shining’, and Jack is heavily affected by this.

Together with his writer’s block and the demons of the hotel haunting him, Jack has a mental breakdown and the situation takes a turn for the worse.

A Nightmare On Elm Street
1984

A group of teenagers are terrorized by Freddy Krueger, an evil being from another world who gets to his victims by entering into their dreams and killing them with gloves that have knife blades attached to each finger.

American Psycho
2000
Starring: Christian Bale, Reese Witherspoon, Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Bill Sage

Patrick Bateman is a wall street yuppie obscessed with success, status and style with a stunning fiancée.

He is also a psychotic killer who rapes, murders and dismembers both strangers and acquaintances without purpose. The film offers a sharp satire to the dark side of yuppie culture in the 80s, while setting forth a terrifying vision.

The Others
2001
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Christopher Ecclestone, Fionnula Flanagan, James Bentley

While awaiting her husband’s return from war, Grace and her two young children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of their island mansion.
