Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl and the two sequels that followed made superstars of both Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.

2011 sees a fourth instalment of the franchise hit the big screen and On Stranger Tides looks set to make a new star of Brit actor Sam Claflin.

Claflin kicked off his acting career last year when he starred in The Pillars of the Earth, which also starred Ian McShane and Rufus Sewell.

The actor took on the role of Richard in the small screen adaptation of the Ken Follett novel of the same name.

He stayed with TV with movie The Lost Future before appearing in Any Human Heart for Channel Four.

A novelist's life ricochets from 1920s Paris to '50s New York and '80s London. Along the way he meets Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor - the exiled British king and his mistress Wallis Simpson.

Directed by Michael Samuels the series saw the young actor team up with fellow Brit stars Jim Broadbent and Matthew Macfadyen.

And Claflin moved over to the BBC earlier this year as he appeared in United, based on the true story of Manchester United's "Busby Babes" and the 1958 Munich air disaster.

This summer sees the twenty four year old make his big screen debut as he takes on the role of Philip Swift in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The fourth movie in the franchise comes four years after At World’s End hit the big screen - and it could be the role that propels Claflin to greater things.

The character of Swift joins Jack Sparrow and Barbossa on the hunt for the Fountain of Youth - but the evil Blackbeard is hot on their heels.

And Claflin already has his next project lined up as he is all set to star as Prince Charmant in Snow White and the Huntsman.

Set to be directed by Rupert Sanders the movie will also star Kristen Stewart and is based on the Grimm fairy tale Snow White.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is out now.
