Up and coming sports writer Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) is covering the boxing but feels that he is ready to move on to something bigger. His boss however has different ideas as he tells Kernan that his writing is dull and lifeless. But when he saves a man from a grop of teenagers he finds himself face to face with boxing great Bob Satterfield 'the Champ', a man many presumed had died. The Champ has fallen from the dizzy heights of fame and is living on the streets and slowly losing his mind.Kernan's story story about the Champ isn't just his title shot, chance to pove himself as a writer but it gives him a chance to re-examine his own life particularly his relationship with his young son and his wife. The second half of the movie moves away from the inspiring sports movie and instead looks as journalism practices, following the aftermath of Kernan's article.
The movie questions how much resposibilty a journalist has to the subjects in their story and how much fact checking is really necessary when telling someone's story.
The film also tackles ethics and politics and is based on the real life story of L.A Times journalist J.R. Moehringer.
Starring Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Hartnett, Kathryn Morris and Dakota Goyo.
