By 2003 Peter Jackson was one of the most high profile filmmakers after the success of his Lord of the Rings trilogy, a series of movies many thought would not succeed.
But he had silenced all the critics with three outstanding movies, The Return of the King romping home at the Academy Awards picking up eleven gongs from eleven nominations.
The world was his oyster and Hollywood studios were desperate to get aboard the Jackson success train he followed this up with a remake of King Kong, his favourite movie of all time, which also went on to some Oscar success.
But then he has simply fallen off the radar so what has he been up to?
Despite not releasing a movie for the last four years Jackson has been a very busy bunny not just sitting in the director's chair but also taking on several big producing roles.
2009 sees his movies return to the big screen with the release of The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of Alice Sebold's popular novel.
Despite not being the most cheery of stories Sebold's second novel was the must read book of 2002 and Jackson has once again teamed up with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens to pen the script.
Production on the film got underway in October of 2007 and Jackson brought together a great cast of Saoirse Ronan, Rachel Weisz, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Mark Wahlberg.
The New Zealand director is currently working on the live action version of Tintin with Steven Spielberg. Spielberg has directed The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn, in just thirty two days of shooting, and Jackson has now stepped in to work on the special effect side of the film.
However Jackson is expected to shoot a Tintin sequel, but this has year to get the green light.
More recently he has taken on more producing roles with District 9, which is directed by Neill Blomkamp, already under his belt.
He will also produce the remake of British classic The Dam Busters. When it was announced that The Hobbit was given the green light it was assumed that it would be Jackson that would lead the production.
However after a fall out with New Line Cinema it will be Hellboy visionary Guillermo Del Toro that has landed the director's job while Jackson would serve as writer and executive producer.
So with some big movies heading to cinema screens over the next couple of years it looks like Jackson will be back where he belongs.
