2010 has been a another great year for actresses on the big screen with the likes of Sandra Bullock, Anna Kendrick and Gabourey Sidibe turned in award worth performances Angelina Jolie and Gemma Arterton were kicking ass in the blockbusters.
So we take a look at some of the actresses that really stood out in the last twelve months.
Carey Mulligan
The British actress grabbed everyone’s attention at the end of 2009 with her lead performance in An Education, which saw her star alongside Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina and Olivia Williams.
She gained praise on the festival circuit for the role and it wasn’t long before the award nominations came flooding in.
She won a Best Actress Bafta before going on to be nominated at the Golden Globes and Oscars, losing out to Sandra Bullock on both occasions.
Mulligan moved onto a more high profile role this autumn as she starred alongside Michael Douglas, Shia LeBeouf and Josh Brolin in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
Oliver Stone was in the director’s chair for the sequel, which came thirteen years after the original won Douglas an Oscar in 1987.
And the twenty five year old has plenty in the pipeline as she is back on the big screen in the new year as she stars in the big screen adaptation of Never Let Me Go.
The movie is based on the novel by Kazuo Ishiguro and stars fellow Brits Keira Knightley and Andrew Garfield.
The movie has already been heavily praised and there are Supporting Oscar whispers surrounding Mulligan as the awards season has just got underway.
Sandra Bullock
Sandra Bullock has long since been known as one of the best comedy actresses that are currently working in Hollywood but back in March the actress turned in one outstanding dramatic performance.
Bullock took on the role of Leigh Ann Tuohy who takes in a homeless boy named Michael Oher, who went on to be an All American football player.
Based on a true story, which the Oscars always love, Bullock dominated the awards season and got her hand on a Best Actress Oscar with her very first nomination.
Since her award success we haven’t seen Bullock on the big screen but she has plenty of projects in the pipeline in the new year.
She is all set to star in Kiss & Tango and Most Wanted, which sees her reunite with her The Proposal leading man Ryan Reynolds.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and Gravity are also on the horizon.
Chloe Moretz
It has been one hell of a year for Chloe Moretz, who needed just one movie and one Kick Ass character to be thrust into the limelight.
Yes she was Hit Girl in Matthew Vaughn’s comic book hit Kick Ass, which was released earlier this year and was a massive critical hit.
Her rather colourful language may have caused the raising of a few eyebrows but it was an outstanding and hilarious performance from the young actress that she was an overnight success.
Since Kick Ass she has changed genres and was back on the big screen last month with Let Me In, an American remake of Swedish movie Let The Right One In.
And it was another positive reception for Mortez as she ends the year on a high. And the actress has a whole host of movies in the pipeline as we look ahead to 2011.
She has already completed work on The Fields and an untitled comedy and is currently filming Hugo Cabret, which sees her working with director Martin Scorsese and actors Jude Law, Emily Mortimer and Ray Winstone.
Also lined up for Moretz are The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea and Hick, which will also star Kirsten Dunst.
There is also a Kick Ass sequel on the way, not to be released until 2012, which will see her reprise the role of Hit Girl.
