The Hurt Locker

The Academy Awards the most coveted prize on the movie calendar and, lets face it every actor would love to get their hands on one.

And I think that most people have accepted that it's going to be a straight off fight between Avatar and The Hurt Locker for Best Picture and Best Director, but could someone spoil the party?

So here at FemaleFirst we take a look at the nominees and try to predict who the winners are going to be.

The Hurt Locker is the movie that everyone has talking about at the $11 million movie has stood toe to toe with the $300 million Avatar, and has quite often come out on top.

The Iraq war movie is a real gritty drama that is void of any politics, messages, propaganda or sides and that is what makes it such a great movie; it's a personal story of three guys doing their job.

And while there's no denying that Avatar is a massive achievement that will propel cinema forward FemaleFirst backs The Hurt Locker to take home the Best Picture prize.

Kathryn Bigelow would become the first female filmmaker to win Best Director if she was to walk away with the gong on Sunday and having bagged most of the directing prizes on the awards circuit she is the favourite to win, Cameron has an Oscar!

It's about time that Jeff Bridges got his hands on an Academy Award and I can't see anyone spoiling that party.

And while Sandra Bullock has taken the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her performance in The Blind Side the Academy may go with Meryl Streep.

There will be no surprises in the supporting categories with Christoph Waltz taking Best Supporting Actor for Inglourious Basterds and Mo'Nique taking yet another award for Precious.

While everyone believes that it's Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds that could sneak in and take Best Picture I think it's the Best Original Screenplay where Tarantino has the best chance of a win.

Having taken most of the Best Adapted Screenplay gongs for Up In The Air Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner may just add the Oscar to their ever growing collection.

Up may find itself in the Best Picture category, on the second animation film in Oscar history to achieve such as feat, the Pixar movie faces no competition the Best Animation catefory.
