Lincoln, Les Miserables and Zero Dark Thirty are set to go head to head for the Best Picture Oscar as the nominees have just been revealed.
Lincoln was the favourite to lead the Best Picture category and is the favourite to scoop the award.
Silver Linings Playbook, Life of Pi, Django Unchained and Argo were also nominated while Beats of the Southern Wild and Amour were the surprise additions.
The blockbusters of 2012 were completely overlooked as The Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall both missed out - despite there being room to nominate one more film.
Beasts of the Southern Wild was the big surprise as it was nominated for Best Picture, Best Director for Benh Zeitlin and Best Actress for Quvenzhané Wallis.
There had been some awards support when the movie hit the big screen but in recent weeks it looked like it was going to miss out.
The Best Actress category made history as Emmanuelle Riva is the oldest actress to be nominated for Amour while Quvenzhané Wallis becomes the youngest at nine.
Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts and Jessica Chastain make up the rest of the category while former winner Marion Cotillard was a shock omission for her performance in Rust and Bone.
There were no such shocks in the Best Actor category as Daniel Day Lewis, Denzel Washington, Hugh Jackman, Bradley Cooper and Joaquin Phoenix were recognised for their work.
The Best Director category has been an open one all award's season with a whole host of filmmakers picking up awards along the way.
Despite dominating the award's landscape in recent weeks there was no place for Kathryn Bigelow while Tom Hooper and Ben Affleck were also overlooked.
Steven Spielberg. Michael Haneke, David O'Russell, Benh Zeitlin and Ang Lee will all battle it out for the gong.
Some movies and performances that we expected to be nominated have made the shortlist but there are quite a few shocks on this list.
