No Country For Old Men swept last night's Oscars picking up four awards including Best picture beating British hopeful Atonement. The film's director Joel and Ethan Coen also picked up Best Director gong for the film. While it might have been the biggest night on the Hollywood calendar it was Europe who triumphed at the awards taking all the acting prizes.British star Daniel Day Lewis, who was the favourite to win, picked up Best Actor for his performance in There will Be Blood beating off other high profile names as George Clooney and Johnny Depp.It was the actor's second Academy Award after he was recognised in 1990 for My Left Foot. There was also success in the Best Supporting Actress category as Tilda Swinton followed up her Bafta win for her role in Michael Clayton.
However there was disappointment for Julie Christie as she was beaten by French woman Marion Cotillard to the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in la Vie En Rose.
Favourite Javier Bardem picked up Best Supporting Actor for his role as ruthless killer in No Country For Old Men.
And there was more British success in the smaller categories as Alexandra Byrne won Best Costume Design for Elizabeth: The Golden Age, as well as The Golden Compass picking up Best Visual Effects.
There was also success in the Best Animated Short category for Peter and the Wolf and The Bourne Ultimatum picked up three prizes: Best Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Film Editing, a film which was directed by Brit Paul Greengrass.
But there was major disappointment for Atonement which only managed to pick up one award, Best Score, from it's seven nominations.
The awards itself did have something to celebrate: it's 80th birthday as organiser paid tribute to the last eighty years by showing montages of past winners.
But the fact that the ceremony went ahead at all was a celebration in itself as the writer's strike threatened to jeopardise the ceremony.
