The culmination of one of cinema’s greatest trilogies The Return of The King became the joint biggest Oscar winner of all time and brought to life what some fans had called ‘un-filmable’.
Bringing to a conclusion the epic saga by British author J.R.R. Tolkien, the film sees the war between the forces of good and the dark lord Sauron turn vicious. Aragon, Legolas and Gimli (Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom and John Rhys-Davies) race towards the city of Gondor to fight hordes of evil ‘orcs’.
All this time, the miniature Frodo and Samwise (Elijah Wood and Sean Astin) continue to destroy the ring in the volcanic fire of Mount Doom, led by the conniving creature Gollum.
If this all sounds a little too Dungeons and Dragons, don’t be put off. This is a film about people with roles bigger than themselves and a story of hope and courage against insurmountable odds that just happens to take place in a land of swords and magic.
Kiwi director Peter Jackson brings this tale to life so well, even the greatest Hobbit-haters can’t help but admire it.
With characters so deep and fulfilling, by the third film you really care about whether they live or die, a feat most films don’t accomplish.
Breaking box office records and scooping ten Oscars including best film and best director, The Return of The King still remains as possibly the greatest fantasy book adaptation of all time.
