The breathtaking backdrop of Haryana in North India is the setting for the new comedy-drama Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola, releasing in cinemas on 11th January 2013 by Twentieth Century Fox.
The rustic romance is set in a small, picturesque farming village, where three protagonists’ lives entwine with bitter-sweet and unexpected results.
Boasting an eclectic cast of veteran actors, Bollywood’s young gun rising stars and also the symbolic ‘Gulabi Bhains’ (pink buffalo), the film’s very own item girl, Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola is a comedy drama set in the rustic surroundings of a village in Haryana in India.
The film tells the story of of Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapur - Maqbool, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron), a wealthy industrialist who loves his drink, his daughter ‘Bijlee’ (Anushka Sharma - Jab Tak Hai Jaan; Rab Ne Banadi Jodi) and the unusual bond they both share with Harry’s Man Friday, ‘Matru’ (Imran Khan - Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu; Mere Brother Ki Dulhan).
Much to her father's delight, Bijlee is all set to marry Baadal (Arya Babbar - Tees Maar Khan, Khiladi 786), the son of a powerful politician Chaudhari Devi (Shabana Azmi - Godmother, Midnight’s Children).
This alliance which is far from just being a simple union of two young people becomes the seed for a story that brings twists and turns in the lives of Matru, Bijlee and Mandola.
The film is directed by cutting-edge filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, whose list of esteemed directorial credits includes Maqbool and Omkara, which see Vishal give his own interpretation of two Shakespearean classics, Macbeth and Othello.
