Our countdown of the Best Movies of 2012 continues today as we move away from the smaller dramas such as Rust and Bone and Beasts of the Southern Wild to heap praise on a much bigger movie.
If you have only seen one sci-fi film in 2012 then make sure that it is Looper as it is a movie that stood head and shoulders over everything else that has been released in this genre this year.
Looper was a movie that many were getting excited about throughout the year and it was a film that absolutely did not disappoint.
When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a 'Looper' a hired gun, like Joe (Gordon-Levitt) is waiting to mop up.
Joe is getting rich and life is good? until the day the mob decides to close the loop, sending back Joe's future self (Willis) for assassination.
Looper is a movie that is intelligent, imaginative as well as fast paced, slick and action packed.
This is a movie that has everything and director Rian Johnson must be applauded for the spectacle that he delivered.
Not only was the script, that he penned, well written but the characters were so complex and interesting that you couldn't tear your eyes away from the screen for a single second.
Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon Levitt are simply fantastic as they play the older and younger version of the same character.
One man who is let to live his life and the other who has had everything taken from him and it is a battle of uncertainly against knowledge and past against future which makes for a riveting tale.
To say that Johnson has many plates spinning in this movie would be a bit of an understatement but he bounces back and forwards between the past and the future with ease and keeps the audience totally engaged in the process.
But Looper is also one of those movies where you have no real idea what is going to happen next and the conclusion of the film was simply fantastic - must admit I did not see that coming.
Looper is one of the most stylish and well crafted science fiction movies that has hit the big screen in many a year as Johnson has painstakingly created a world that looks fantastic and completely sucks you in.
This is a movie that dares to have a brain and it is a film that certainly won't leave you disappointed - and absolute must see this year.
