Lincoln

Lincoln

A Steven Spielberg movie is always something to get excited by but when he does a character driven piece that excitement is heightened every further.

Spielberg has been behind the likes of Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List - both big movies that concentrated on story and character development - and Lincoln looks set to do the same.

Spielberg has been behind some great movies over the last decade but you have to go back to 1998 and Saving Private Ryan for when the filmmaker last won the Best Director Oscar.

Spielberg is a major contender for the gong as well as Best Picture for Lincoln - and we all know how much the Academy loves a biopic movie.

Unlike most bio-pic movies Lincoln is not a birth to death story of the former U.S. President but instead focuses on the last few years of his life as he fought to get slavery abolished and bring the U.S. Civil War to an end.

Daniel Day Lewis will play the title role and he is on the hunt for his third Best Actor Oscar after finding success with My Left Foot and There Will Be Blood - hard to believe he almost didn’t take on the role.

It will not surprise you to hear that a Spielberg movie has amassed an impressive cast with Sally Field and Joseph Gordon Levitt set to play Lincoln’s wife and son.

And as it that trio of talented actors isn’t enough to wet your appetite then a cast list that also includes Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Jackie Earle Haley really should.

In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery.

With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

While there is no major frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar just yet Lincoln is expected to be a major player on the award’s circuit - don’t be surprised to see this movie waltz away with a couple of major Oscars in February; however it is going to be a tight and tough competition.

Lincoln is released 25th January
